Subject: Chinese Machine Learning Experts

Phil,

Rob Holte suggested that you might have a few contacts of numerical ML
people who would be interested in positions in Shanghai. Honeywell's
research labs are looking to build a lab of ML experts in China. Below
is
the job description; we're looking for (about) 2 people -- one more
senior
person, and one relatively junior.

Feel free to pass this announcement to whomever you like, and thanks
for

any info you might have,

Karen.

The Knowledge Services group of the Honeywell Laboratories is looking
to
grow a machine learning group at its Shanghai branch. We are
particulary interested in hiring individuals with a Ph.D. or research
background in numerical machine learning, data mining or statistics.

A Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in computer science or a related
area
is required. In addition to technical competence, breadth of
knowledge,
and research promise, other evaluation criteria for this position
include the ability to formulate and carry out an independent program
of
research and good communication skills, both spoken and written.

Candidates should be familiar with a breadth of techniques from
statistics, data mining, machine learning, and data visualization.
Analysis techniques should include supervised, unsupervised and
reinforcement learning, with a particular emphasis on analysis of time
series data. Data sets will frequently be collected from sensors
strategically placed in homes, commercial buildings, oil refineries,
and
aircraft. Challenges will include handling massive datasets, high
dimensionality, heterogeneous and noisy data. Results will be geared
toward such applications as anomaly detection, crisis monitoring, and
decision support.

The Honeywell Labs are Honeywell's corporate R&D laboratories. The
largest group is located in Minneapolis, MN, with two other locations
in
Prague, Czech Republic and Shanghai, P.R. China. The main research
groups are organized according to affiliation with Automation &
Controls, Aerospace, and Engines & Systems. About half of the research
performed at the Labs is funded by government agencies, the rest comes
from Honeywell product divisions.

The candidate will be working closely with personnel based in
Minneapolis, MN and Prague, Czech Republic. The group consists of
approximately 15 research staff within the Knowledge Systems lab of
Automation & Controls. We have ongoing projects in the areas of
planning and scheduling, constraint-based reasoning, simulation,
health
maintenance and diagnosis, real-time AI, information modeling, machine
learning, and collaborative agent-based systems. The work environment
fosters the development of individual research projects either within
or
complementary to current research areas. The research we conduct is
aimed at directly impacting important problems of Honeywell and its
customers. Proving out ideas through the construction of prototype
systems is a common activity, though not to the complete exclusion of
more theoretical research. Interaction with the larger research
community and collaboration with researchers both inside and outside
of
Honeywell is encouraged.

Those interested in applying for this position should submit the
following
information:

   - A resume or curriculum vitae, including relevant publications.
   - Reprints of at most three research papers.
   - A description of relevant research experience, *if* the papers do
         not make that obvious.
   - Names and phone numbers or email addresses for three references.
   - Desired start date.

Candidates expecting to be available for work within the next 3-6
months
are encouraged to apply. English proficiency, both spoken and written,
is required. Skills in working on a global team would be a benefit.
Applications or requests for additional information should be directed
to our manager:
