Attendees at the 27th annual SAS Users Group International (SUGI)
conference in Orlando, Florida, April 14 - 17 were the first to hear a
number of ground-breaking announcements from SAS (see related stories:
SAS Raises the Bar in Financial Intelligence and New Version of Risk
Management), but the introduction of Version 9 -- dubbed Project Mercury
-- and of the SAS Learning Edition was the technology news that users
came to hear.
The Next Generation of SAS
Project Mercury, the next generation of the SAS Intelligence
Architecture, will be delivered through SAS Version 9 in several
phases over the next 18 months.
Release 9.0, which will be available by third quarter, provides a
powerful foundation for SAS business solutions, offering unprecedented
speed, performance and scalability in an open enterprise-class
business intelligence platform. During the Opening Session of SUGI,
technology officers from GE Card Services reported that their advance
copy of Version 9 is as much as 27 percent faster in some areas.
Future releases will bring information access to an entirely new level,
introducing interfaces tailored for various classes of information
consumers and managers across an organization.
"Following SAS' vision, Project Mercury provides the foundation to
create and deliver intelligence that permeates the entire enterprise,"
says Jim Davis, SAS senior vice president and chief marketing officer.
"Businesses today are faced with fiercer competition than they've ever
seen, scarce resources, limited budgets and shrinking cycle times.
This environment has a low tolerance for error, so it's even more
critical to be able to quickly obtain accurate, timely information
from every arm of the business. This involves hindsight and the
ability to predict key business events and directions based on real
intelligence, not just gut instincts."
"SAS continues to be crucial in maximizing a company's investments in
its existing IT environment," says Don Hatcher, vice president of
technology strategy for SAS. "At the same time, long-term risk is
minimized by the ability of the SAS infrastructure to adjust and grow as
a company reacts to meet market demands."
Project Mercury is founded on four cornerstones: usability,
manageability, interoperability and scalability. The new Java-based
interface will streamline the consistent look and feel of SAS and extend
user access capabilities. Version 9 also will centralize the
administration to provide a flexible and efficient entry point when
maintaining and launching SAS applications. The highly compatible and
interoperable Version 9 platform environment expands SAS' continued
support of open standards. With this improved foundation, SAS can
augment and adapt to address a customer's dynamic technology
environment.
"The SAS Intelligence Architecture provides an integrated, interoperable
foundation from which business benefit is derived. Each and every
component of the Intelligence Architecture provides incremental,
successive value," explains Hatcher. "This value is realized through new
capabilities ensuring fast, accurate, and intelligent answers to
business questions."
Release 9.1 will continue building on the base architecture to deliver
the highest possible quality and customer value. Through Release 9.1,
SAS plans to expand scalability capabilities, integrate further with
enterprise information portals, and support key Web service standards as
they mature, such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Universal
Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) and Web Services
Description Language (WSDL). This will increase the software's usability
and interactivity.
Powerful, Inexpensive Learning Edition Package
For the first time ever, SAS is offering a personal version of its
leading business intelligence and analytical software. The SAS
Learning Edition combines capabilities for data management,
statistical analysis, advanced graphics, business forecasting, quality
improvement and a roster of powerful PC Windows products from the SAS
Intelligence Architecture platform. SAS' easy-to-use Windows user
interface, Enterprise Guide, provides seamless integration of the
various applications.
Retailing for $125, the SAS Learning Edition provides a low-cost,
PC-based entry point to a new generation of business intelligence
software. It is intended for both students and business professionals
seeking to hone their SAS skills through hands-on experience.
The package also includes an Enterprise Guide tutorial, online help, and
a turnkey customized installation. A beginner's manual for Enterprise
Guide offers step-by-step instructions, and a Learning Edition community
Web site featuring links to other educational SAS resources,
including e-learning courses, classroom training and books.
Demonstrating its commitment to higher learning, SAS plans to offer free
copies of the Learning Edition to higher education faculty who are
exploring teaching and curriculum options for acquiring SAS skills.
"Professionals who are able to harness the power of SAS software are
in high demand in today's job market," says Davis, the SAS vice
president. "The Learning Edition is an ideal solution for individuals
seeking an opportunity to expand their SAS knowledge and become
further educated in enterprisewide intelligence."
Package Availability
The SAS Learning Edition will be available this summer. To reserve a
copy, call SAS at (800) 727-3228 or visit the SAS Learning Edition Web
site. The learning package will also be available through Borders
Books & Music and online at Amazon.com.
