It is, IMHO, very hard to write a survey paper. 

Look at those in ACM Computing Surveys. They usually surprise ppl who have
some knowledge in the subject in question, let alone beginners.

But it is _very_ helpful to do a survey before you jump into a new area. To
that end, you might find it helpful to look at related or similar works. My
lesson learned is that the more you know, the more you know you don't know.
In fact, that feeling tends to drive me desperate, :)
