Traditional Chinese prescription (TCP) is quite different from the prescriptio
n of Western medicine. TCP consists of one herb, several herbs, or even more t
han a thousand herbs. Among those herbs exist very complicated synergism and c
onflict relations in various forms. The general effect of a TCP is the group a
ffect after the mutual actions among those herbs. The quantitized analysis of
TCP is a most complicated and important problem for traditional Chinese therap
y. The research of CPIASS is just aimed at this problem. In this paper the Con
cept-Relation Network is used to describe the quantitized analysis system of T
CP, in which methods of Intelligent System and Analysis Support System are ado
pted and the problem concerning the combination of mathematical models and the
knowledge expressions is solved. For the first time a TCP is analyzed in the
light of intrinsic factors and their mutual action, with the results conformin
g to the experience of famous doctors of traditional Chinese medicine.
INTRODUCTION
The research and development of CPIASS, whose objective is to describe the int
rinsic regularity of the traditional Chinese prescriptions (TCP) by means of t
he modern science, and the intelligent science in particular, is the first ste
p to TCP Information System Engineering, a huge system made up about 1 million
TCPs.
TCP is quite different from the prescription of Western medicine. The former c
onsists of one herb, several herbs, or even more than a thousand herbs. Among
those herbs exist very complicated synergism and conflict relations in various
forms. In TCP the fact that a herb exists or not, and its weight increases or
decreases may lead to different healing effects. The general effect of a TCP
is the group effect after the mutual actions among those herbs. Therefore the
quantitized analysis of the general effect concerning TCP is a most conplicate
d and important problem for traditional Chinese therapy. The CPIASS research i
s just aimed at this problem. TCP has history of over 2000 years. According to
incomplete figures, the TCPs recorded in different literatures may approximat
ely amount to 500,000 and according to the statistics of their healing scope,
the TCPs may be up to 1 million. They are really as vast as the open area. Wha
t are the regulations of TCP yielded by the close combination of the clinical experience and the unique thinking schemes in traditional Chine
se medicine (TCM)? This is a gap between the modern science and TCM.
As far as the intelligent system research of TCM is concerned, China comes fir
st in the whole world. A lot of TCM expert systems for diagnosis and remedy an
d also the general purposed expert systems of TCM have been developed inChina
(2,3). But the Intelligent system for TCP analysis has not been seen so far. I
n Japan the research of structural analysis for TCP was done (4). But in such
research the intrinsic factors have not been touched, such as drug effects, pr
operties, flavours, channel-tropism, composing principles of seven emotions, d
rug processing and the herb relations of principles, associates, adjuvents, me
ssengers. In America the appearance frequency for herbs in TCP has been analyz
ed by computers (5).
FEATURES, MOTHODOLOCY AND OBJECTIVES
Features of TCP and IASS
The object of TCP quantitized analysis is a complicated knowledge system. The
distinguished features of this system are multi-aspects, multi-factors, multi-
theories, multi-mithods, multi-levels, multi-schools, multi-vocabularies and m
ulti-references. For such a complicated and extremely unstandardized system, a
n Intelligent Analysis Support System (IASS) is adopted. The Analysis Support
System (ASS) is this paper is a variant of DSS. ASS is a software system provi
ded for direct users in solving semi-structured or unstructured analysis probl
ems. The IASS is an intelligent ASS.
Methodology
The characteristics of CPIASS methodology are as follow:
The analysis object of TCP is treated as a complicated knowledge system which
is described as a whole by Concept - Relation Network (CRN).
Intelligent techniques are adopted and the knowledge base are used for intelli
gent analysis.
Mathematical models are used for quantitized analysis which is combined tightl
y with knowledge expressions. The combination of model and knowledge, promoted
in this paper, is different from systems described in literatures (7,8,9,10,1
1,12).
The system provides a method for the TCP analysis, but for higher level users
the system allows them to select or modify the analysis method, model, knowled
ge inknowledge base and the weight values according to their analysis purposes
, thereby the system proves to be a "soft" system supporting their analysis re
search of TCP.
Objectives
The objectives of the TCP analysis are as follows:
*Give a prescription, and analyze its function structure shown in Fig.1.
Give a disease (including pathogenic factors and pathogenesis) through the tre
atment according to differentiation, and determine the formulation of prescrip
tion and the drug processing in accordance with the process shown in Fig.2.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS
The actions of TCP to human bodies, in general, are nothing but reinforcing th
e body resistance and eliminating the external pathogenic factors as well as i
nternal pathologic products. In Fig.3 the Theory of Three Elements (6), which
is evolved from the ancient Theory of Five Elements, is used to express the ac
tion of TCP to human bodies.
The system of prescription structure analysis can be described by Concept - Re
lation Network (CRN) shown in Fig.4. The CRN consists of concept nodes and ori
ented relation arcs. The CRN shown in Fig.4 is a single input (yi), multi - ou
tput (go, zo, no, lo, fo) system with 11 nodes and 20 oriented arcs. The CRN i
s suitable for describing the IASS which has both mathematical models and know
ledge representation.
