I think DM is a typical interdiscipline area. AI, DB, stat, etc. all 
play significant roles in DM. The question here is analogous to that
of AI: is it a branch of CS, or an independent area? Even analogous 
to that of CS: is it a branch of maths/EE, or independent? The answer
will evolve with time. Most probably, it will become an independent
discipline finally. But whether you'll get a "department of DM" at
some univ one day depends more on politics.
