I agree.  LaTeX is the standard technical artical/book preparation
tool. It's free. It supports both Windows and Unix, Chinese and English.
Unlike Word, LaTeX can handle easily books with several hundrad pages. 
It can automatically generate ToC, index, bibliography, 
equation/defintion/figure/table references.
The founder of TeX, Donald Knuth, is one of the Turing Award receivers. 
I had always been using Word until one year ago.  Now I use LaTeX for 
all my artical/thesis preparation.

For the ps problem with Word, make sure your final file is viewable in
Ghostview.  Referees and Editors usually use Ghostview to open ps/pdf files.
To generate PS files, acrobat is not a must.  Just print to file using
a PS printer. Try different printers and you will find a good driver outputing
stadard PS files viewable in Ghostview.  Many researchers in MSR uses Word
to generate good PS file.
