Short Biography 
Jiawei Han, Professor of the School of Computing Science and Director of Datab
ase Systems Research Laboratory, Simon Fraser University, Canada. He obtained 
his Ph.D. in Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 198
5. Prior to joining SFU, he was an assistant professor in Northwestern Univers
ity from 1986 to 1987. 
He has conducted research in the areas of data mining (knowledge discovery in 
databases), data warehousing, spatial databases, multimedia databases, deducti
ve and object-oriented databases, and logic programming, with over 100 journal
 and conference publications. He is known for his work on data mining and has 
been invited to give talks or tutorials in international conferences, universi
ties, and industry firms in many countries. His research has been supported by
 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada (1988--pr
esent), Network of Centres of Excellence of Canada (IRIS-3 Project Leader for 
the project "Building, Querying, Analyzing, and Mining Data Warehouses on the 
Internet", 1998-2002), IBM Canada, HP Lab, B.C. Science Council, B.C. Advanced
 Systems Institute, Seagate Software, and some other funding agencies. 

He has served as a program committee member for over 30 international conferen
ces and workshops, including KDD'2001 (Bewst paper award chairman), VLDB'2000,
 SIGMOD'2000 (Exhibit chairman), EDBT'2000, SIGMOD'99, KDD'99 (tutorial chairm
an), ICDE'99, SSD'99, KDD'98, ICDE'98, DMKD'98, SSD'97, ICDE'97, KDD'96 (PC co
-chairman), VLDB'96, SIGMOD'96, ICDE'95 (PC vice-chairman), and the guest co-e
ditor of the special issues on data mining for IEEE Transactions on Knowledge 
and Data Engineering (1996), Journal of Intelligent Information Systems (1997)
, and Journal of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (1998). He has been on th
e editorial boards of (Journal of) Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, and Jo
urnal of Intelligent Information Systems.
