Research-wise, this year's SIGMOD and VLDB saw some encouragin progress
in the area of DW and OLAP. Past publications in this area can be found
at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~mendel/dwbib.html and 
http://www.dvs1.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/DVS1/staff/wu/dw.html

As you can see, there are many fields inside the area -- it is almost
impossible to give a general advice. Of course, THE geneal advice is
to raed the paper, find the niche and get a good job done, :)
