DBMS, in general, does not limit itself to exact queries only.
My understanding about that problem is that there are many new types of queries
against the multimediat database. Traditional dbms (even with features 
already in relational form) does not support thos etypes of queries.

The trend of DBMS is to embrace nearly every kind of data. For example, many
commercial DBMSs now have directly/indirect support for spatial indexes/queries.
These queries, otherwise, have to be answered by spatial DBMS before.
