Tips for Northerners Moving South

这篇生活小常识是写给即将要从北方搬到南方的人， 藉由这样子的方式， 你可以多了解一些美国南方人的生活习惯.   当然其中不免有些夸大， 但也多少透露出北方人对南方人的一些刻板印象。

1.  Save all manner of bacon grease.  You will be instructed later how to use it.把你所有的培根油 （bacon grease） 都留着， 稍后就会有人教你如何用它。 （南方人太喜欢吃 bacon grease 了）

2.  If you forget a Southerner's name， refer to him （or her） as "Bubba". You have a 75% chance of being right.如果你忘了一个南方人的名字， 你就叫它 （Bubba）， 就会有 75% 的机会被你猜对。 （因为南方人很多都叫 Bob 不然就是 Bobby.）

3.  Just because you can drive on snow and ice does not mean we can.  Stay home the two days of the year it snows.你能在雪地中开车不代表我们就能。   一年中唯一下雪的二天你就待在家里休息吧。 （南方很少下雪， 一年最多下个二三次， 但几乎每次一下雪就放假一天。）

4.  Don't be surprised to find movie rentals and bait in the same store.当你发现录影带出租店居然在卖鱼饵时， 不要太惊讶。 （乡下地方不都是这样？）

5. Do not buy food at the movie store.不要在录影带店买食物。 （因为你买到的可能是鱼饵！！）

6.  If it can't be fried in bacon grease， it ain't worth cooking， let alone eating.如果某样食物不能用培根油 （bacon grease） 来炒， 它就不值得煮来吃， 更不用说拿来吃了。 （暗讽南方人什么都要用 bacon grease 炒来吃。）

7.  Remember：  "Y'all" is singular.  "All y'all" is plural.  "All y'all's" is plural possessive.记得， "Y'all" 是单数， "All y'all" 是複数， "All y'alls" 是複数所有格。  （南方人喜欢用 y'all 来代替 you， 正如同北方人喜欢用 you guy 来代指 you 是一样的，  例如 see you later 你就可以说成 see y'all later.）

8.  There is nothing sillier than a Northerner imitating a southern accent， unless it is a southerner imitating a Boston accent没有任何一件事是比北方人模仿南方人口音更愚蠢的事了， 除了南方人想去模仿波士顿口音这件事之外。 （南方人有一种特殊的口音， 而且很难模仿。  而北方口音中则以波士顿这个地方最具代表性。）

9. Get used to hearing， "You ain't from around here， are you？"习惯听人家这么说， "你不是从这里来的， 对吧？" （北方人来到南方由於生活习惯的不同， 一下子就会被认出来。）

10.  People walk slower here.这里的人都走得比较慢。 （南方的生活步调通常都比较慢。）

11.  Don't be worried that you don't understand anyone.  They don't understand you either.不用担心你不了解其它人在讲什么， 他们同样也听不懂你在讲什么. （南方口音有时候还真的是蛮难听懂的。）

12.  The proper pronunciation you learned in school is no longer proper.你在学校中所学到的正确发音再也不正确了。 （讲得也是南方人的口音很重。）

13.  Be advised：  The "He needed killin'" defense is valid here.接受一下这个建议， "他需要杀戮" 也算是正当防卫的一种. （南方人许多人家里都有枪， 不要随便闯入别人家里.）

14.  If attending a funeral in the South， remember， we stay until the last shovel of dirt is thrown on and the tent is torn down.如果你在南方参加一个葬礼的话， 一定要等到最后一铲土放下去， 帐篷都拆掉了才能走。  （反正南方人有的是时间.）

15.  If you hear a Southerner exclaim， "Hey， y'all， watch this！" stay out of his way.  These are likely the last words he will ever say.如果你听到一个南方人大喊， "喂！ 看看这个东西。" 那么你最好离他远一点， 因为这很可能是他这一生最后的一句话。 （开车走路不专心， 后果自行负责吧！）

16.  Most Southerners do not use turn signals， and they ignore those who do.   In fact， if you see a signal blinking on a car with a southern license plate， you may rest assured that it was on  when the car was purchased.大多数的南方人都不喜欢用方向灯， 就算有人用， 其它人也会忽略它。 事实上， 如果你看到有一台车的方向灯在闪的话， 那么你可以确定这一定是从这辆车买来之后， 方向灯就一直闪着的。 （南方人开车很随兴， 才不用什么方向灯呢！ 如果有人在闪方向灯， 那一定是方向灯坏掉了。）

17.  Northerners can be identified by the spit on the inside of their car's windshield that comes from yelling at other drivers.你可以从挡风玻璃上的口水分辨出谁是北方人， 因为他们总是对着其它的驾驶人大吼大叫。 （北方人生活步调快， 开车也快， 当然不习惯南方人那么样优闲的开车方式。）

18.  The winter wardrobe you always brought out in September can wait until November.你九月份买的衣柜可以等到十一月才开始用。 （南方的天气很暖活， 不像北方那样寒冷。）

19.  If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the most minuscule accumulation of snow， your presence is required at the local grocery store.  It does not matter if you need anything from the store， it is just something you're supposed to do.如果天气预报说， 有一点点可能会积一点小雪的话， 那你就要赶快去超市买东西。 你需不需要什么东西倒无所谓， 反正你要去就对了。 （小笨霖赞曰： 这实在说得太深刻了， 每次预报说可能会下一点雪， 我们这里超市的生鲜食品立刻就被抢购一空， 因为只要一下雪， 大家就无法出门了， 所以要赶紧囤积食物。   这跟台湾的颱风症候群是不是也蛮像的呢？）

20. Satellite dishes are very popular in the South.  When you purchase one it is to be positioned directly in front of your trailer. This is logical bearing in mind that the dish cost considerabley more than the trailer and should， therefore， be displayed.在南方卫星天线是很受欢迎的，   而且当你买了一个之后， 你就应该把它放在你拖车屋 （trailer） 的前面。 这是很合乎逻辑的， 因为通常卫星天线比你的拖车还贵， 所以值得展示。 （南方有许多人是住在拖车屋里—— trailer house 或简称 trailer. 这基本上这就是所谓的货柜屋， 但是你可以请一台拖车——trailer 把它倒处拖着跑， 所以有点像是现代的游牧民族。）

21.  Tornadoes and Southerners going through a divorce have a lot in common. In either case， you know someone is going to lose a trailer.龙卷风跟南方人要离婚在很多方面是很像的， 不管是哪一种情况， 都有人会失去拖车屋。 （龙卷风把屋子吹坏这可以理解， 但为什么离婚跟拖车屋有关呢？ 因为拖车屋就是他们最主要的财产吧！ 离婚呢？ 当然就要把财产分一分了。）

22.  Florida is not considered a southern state.  There are far more Yankees than Southerners living there.佛罗里达不被认为是南方的州， 住在那的北方人远比南方人来的多。 （传统上的南方是指乔治亚， 田纳西， 阿肯色， 阿拉巴马， 密西西比， 路易西安那这些地方。   佛罗里达算是观光盛地， 很多的居民都都来自北方。）

23.  You can ask a Southerner for directions， but unless you already know the positions of key hills， trees and rocks， you're better off trying to find it yourself.你可以向一个南方人问路， 但除非你对那里的一草一木都很熟悉， 不然你还是要自己找路。 （南方算是比较乡下地方， 所以比较没有明显人为的地标， 例如高楼， 加油站等。   所以他们都会用大树或是石头来当作指路的地标。）
