No comprehensive effort has been made to generalize or document the build
process for the Apache 1.x module.  (By contrast, we provide detailed
instructions for building the module for Apache 2.x, for later versions of
Apache offer more opportunities for clean integration of modules.)

The module, as it stands, could be substantially more configurable, and
its code is not as clean as those of other libraries in this distribution.  
However, we hope you find it useful -- provided you understand its
limitations.  We hope in the near future to provide a cleaner version.

Some isolated build tips:

* OpenSSL is required; point the Makefile to it manually.
* There's a 'testssl' target in the Makefile which might be useful
  to test the "CAS client" functionality in isolation
