* Practice error situations. Complete the course labs, inserting error situations into the lab. For IT Pro courses, consider errors, such as network connectivity, permissions, data storage, and procedural errors. For developer courses, consider syntax, boundary conditions, and memory management.
* Review technical papers that may be available and practice any techniques or procedures described.
* Where possible, use operating system tools to observe what is going on behind the code or the IT process.
Use the trainer kit materials. The trainer kit for each course includes a Trainer Materials CD. These materials may contain additional readings, technical papers, and utilities. Also, review the course preparation checklist for other suggestions.
Prepare yourself instructionally
Prepare by attending the course. Attending the Microsoft course you seek to deliver is an excellent method of delivery preparation. Attending the course will help you better prepare to teach by obtaining additional product knowledge, completing the labs, observing common problems students have, and understanding the course flow and timings. The course you choose to attend should be delivered by an experienced MCT who has at least two years of experience delivering Microsoft courses. It is recommended that you bring your own trainer kit to the course so that you can make notes for future reference.
Participate in course chats, online preparation seminars, and trainer readiness events. Starting this year, look for scheduled chats with the courseware development teams at Microsoft. These chats will be held upon or around a course release and as often as needed, depending on demand. Other online resources for helping you prepare for a given course are in the planning stages. Also, visit the private MCT Web site for information regarding trainer readiness events at locations around the world.
Check the latest error log for the course. An error log is kept up-to-date for every course and is maintained on the private MCT Web site. You should note any appropriate changes in your Delivery Guide.
Review the MCT newsgroups. Check out the MCT newsgroup that corresponds to the course you are preparing to teach. You will find many tips and tricks for delivering the lectures and managing the labs from instructors who have taught the course many times.
Deliver to your peers. If possible, deliver the modules (or the full course) to your peers. If this is not possible, practice delivering the modules aloud to yourself so that you can hear yourself.
Prove your skills
Most Microsoft courses prepare students to pass a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) exam. You should pass the exam associated with the course you plan to teach, not only to prove your skills to yourself and your employer, but also to provide credibility with your students. In some cases, more than one exam is associated with a course.
MCP exams are developed to validate your mastery of technical competencies. Through rigorous performance-based testing, the MCP exams certify your ability to design, develop, implement, and support solutions with Microsoft products. See the Microsoft Certification Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/mcp for more information about these certifications.
MCP exams are administered by Prometric and VUE. To register for one of these exams, go to http://www.prometric.com or http://www.vue.com/MS. From these Web sites, candidates can choose to register by the Web or to find registration telephone numbers in their region. To take advantage of your MCT exam discount, you must register by telephone.
Section 5: MCT 2003 Program Requirements
The MCT program year runs from October 2002 through September 2003. Each year, trainers will be asked to meet certain requirements to renew their status for the following year. (Current MCTs: Please refer to Appendix 2 of this Program Guide to review the requirements for the MCT 2002 program year.) There are important differences for the MCT 2003 program year.
To renew your MCT status in October 2004, you must meet the following requirements during the 2003 program year (October 1, 2002-September 30, 2003):
* Deliver Microsoft training courses.
* Earn technical continuing education credits.
* Earn instructional continuing education credits.
Deliver at least two Microsoft training courses
To remain a part of the MCT community, you must deliver at least two training courses of 10 modules each or 20 modules delivered in any combination throughout the year. The following courseware is approved:
* MOC or MSDN Training, both classroom or blended solutions
* Custom courses made up of at least 50 percent MOC or MSDN Training modules
* MSF or MOF courses
* ALS courses when delivered at a Microsoft IT Academy or a not-for-profit, accredited academic institution
Training can be delivered in any venue (Microsoft CTEC, Microsoft Certified Partner, Microsoft IT Academy, customer site, and so on), as long as it uses the Microsoft courseware listed above. To prove your deliveries, you must fill out a Proof of Delivery form, which lists the course taught, the date of the course, and number of modules and which is signed by your employer. This form is available for download from the private MCT Web site. You will not need to submit this form, but you should keep this form on file for audit purposes.
Earn technical continuing education credits
MCTs maintain their technical skills by participating in professional development activities throughout the year. You must earn 15 technical continuing education credits (CECs) throughout the course of the program year, between October 1, 2002, and September 30, 2003.
Technical CECs can be earned as follows:
* Pass a Microsoft certification exam (5 credits). These credits are automatically applied when the exam provider sends exam results to Microsoft.
Audit requirements: Exam information is stored automatically for you in your transcript, although you should always keep a copy of your score report. Credits are not granted for failed exams.
* Attend a Microsoft course (1 credit per day). Attend any Microsoft course (MOC, MSDN Training, MSF, MOF, ALS).
Audit requirements: Maintain a copy of your course completion certificate. It should include the course number and title, number of days, location, date, and signature of the instructor. Online courses will count for this requirement. You do not need an official Microsoft course completion certificate, but you need a course certificate that includes the same information.
* Attend a Microsoft technical conference (1 credit per day). Attend a technical conference covering Microsoft technologies. A list of approved conferences will be maintained on the private MCT Web site. The conference must be listed on the site in order to count for credit.

Audit requirements: Save your conference badge and receipt for payment. The combination of these documents should show the conference name, location, and dates.
* Real-world application of skills (1 credit per 16 hours of billable time). Earn credits for applying your technical skills outside the classroom. Skills include architecting, designing, implementing, developing, configuring, and troubleshooting by using current Microsoft technology in a real-world situation.

Audit requirements: For proof of completion, keep an invoice on file that shows the dates of the work completed, a description of the work, number of hours, and contact information of the employer. In addition, include a one- to three-page write-up of the work that describes the project objectives, challenges, Microsoft technologies used, and the solution.

Earn instructional continuing education credits
You must complete one of the following activities between October 1, 2002, and September 30, 2003 to develop your instructional skills (each activity is worth 5 credits):
* Attend a Microsoft course.
* Attend an MCT trainer readiness event. Events will be listed on the private MCT Web site. Examples include MCT sessions at Microsoft technical conferences and other MCT exclusive events sponsored by Microsoft. The event must be listed on the site in order to count for credit.
Audit requirements: Save your event badge, receipt for payment, and agenda. The combination of these documents should show the event name, location, dates, and content.
* Attend a training skills course. Attend a currently approved training skills course for your region, a trainer skills course hosted by your Microsoft CTEC, or a course at an accredited academic institution that directly applies to presentation skills.
Audit requirements: Keep your signed and dated course certificate or official transcript on file for proof.

New MCT continuing education credits
The number of CECs is prorated for new MCTs, depending on when you join the program, as follows:
* October-January. New MCTs receive 5 technical credits upon MCT certification.
* February-May. New MCTs receive 10 technical credits and 5 instructional credits upon MCT certification.
* June-September. New MCTs receive 15 technical credits and 5 instructional credits upon MCT certification.
IMPORTANT CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT NOTES
Course Attendance
We know that attending a Microsoft (MOC or MSDN Training) course can prepare you both technically and instructionally. Therefore, you can earn both technical and instructional credits by attending a course. It is your choice whether to apply course attendance to your technical credits or your instructional credits. However, you may not count the same class toward both credits.
Your Transcript
MCT technical exam CECs will appear on your transcript. Honor system CECs will not appear on your transcript, but you may print a copy of your honor system CECs by using the MCT Enrollment tool at any time during the program year. This printout reflects the credits that you entered during program renewal or reinstatement.
Additional Activities
Microsoft reserves the right to allow additional activities and events to count as credit toward your CECs. Such additions may be announced in the MCT Flash newsletter or posted on the private MCT Web site.
Section 6: The Honor System
MCTs are considered to be professionals in their field. We recognize you as top performers who exemplify the best technical trainers in the world. Therefore, reporting of most MCT program requirements is based on the honor system. When you renew each year by using the online application form, you will confirm that you met your delivery day requirement and enter the CECs that you earned during the year.
Although you will not be asked to mail or fax proof of delivery days or CECs, we expect you to keep your own records proving your claims. Additionally, Microsoft will audit a selected number of MCTs each year.
Be Prepared for an Audit
In case you are audited, prepare and keep a file with records that indicate completion of the delivery days and CECs you attested to during your renewal. These proofs of compliance should match the items you listed in your renewal application.
If the audit determines that you have intentionally falsified your credentials, or you cannot produce evidence of compliance, you will be decertified. Depending on the severity of noncompliance, you may be permanently decertified. In this case, you will also permanently lose your MCP certifications. This strict application of certification requirements is intended to protect the majority of trainers who abide by the honor system.
Losing your certification
MCTs may be permanently dropped from the program for the following reasons:
* Delivering a Microsoft course without using student course materials in original form (for example, using photocopied student or trainer materials)
* Cheating on MCT program requirements
* Cheating on an MCP exam or helping another candidate cheat on an MCP exam
* Using the MCT logo in a manner that violates the terms and agreement you signed in the MCT application
* Not representing Microsoft or the Microsoft CTEC, Microsoft IT Academy, or Microsoft Certified Partner professionally and ethically
If you are decertified as an MCT for any of the above disciplinary reasons, you will also be decertified as an MCP.
Section 7: Certification States
The MCT program is an annual program for individuals. We have included options to allow you to take a year off and to reinstate your certification if you are at some time decertified. This section lists the rules for renewing, reinstating, or choosing inactive status and provides several scenarios to help you determine your status and the consequences of your choices.
