Section 1: Definitions
Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs) are qualified instructionally and certified technically by Microsoft to deliver Microsoft Official Curriculum or MSDN(r) Training instructor-led courses.
Microsoft courses refer to courseware developed by Microsoft for a variety of audiences by using different brands. These include the following:
* Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) and Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Training courseware educates computer professionals who develop with, support, and implement Microsoft products, technologies, and solutions.
* Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) and Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) courseware delivers organizational training to develop and integrate business solutions in a timely and efficient manner, using best practices contributed by Microsoft Product Groups, Microsoft Consulting Services, and Microsoft Partners.
* Academic Learning Series (ALS) courseware is designed specifically for the academic community. Materials are divided into lessons appropriate to be delivered over several weeks.
Microsoft authorized education channels include Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centers (Microsoft CTEC), Microsoft Certified Partners, and the Microsoft IT Academy Program. As an MCT, you will primarily teach computer professionals within the Microsoft CTEC channel; however, your MCT credential will be highly valued by Microsoft Certified Partners and in academic channels.
Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centers (Microsoft CTECs) are the premier training channel authorized to deliver Microsoft courses to computer professionals. These companies are Microsoft Certified Partners who meet special requirements that guarantee the proper hardware, trainer, and training environment for Microsoft courses.
Microsoft IT Academy Program (IT Academy) includes accredited institutions that are authorized to deliver Microsoft courses (less than 12 hours per week) to students enrolled at that institution.
Microsoft Certified Partners are independent companies that encompass a broad range of expertise and vendor affiliations. These companies are authorized to purchase Microsoft courses and may offer training as part of a larger customer solution or provide public training courses. They are not held to the same standard as Microsoft CTECs.
MCT 2003 program year runs from October 1, 2002, until September 30, 2003. All program requirements must be met during this period.
Section 2: MCT Program Benefits
As an MCT, you receive all the benefits of the Microsoft Certified Professional credential you have earned (see Section 3). In addition, you will enjoy a variety of special benefits:
* Exclusive Internet access to trainer kits for all MOC and MSDN Training courses. Trainer kits on current technologies will be available to download from the Internet through a courseware download center. This includes all languages for MOC and MSDN Training as well as MSF and MOF courseware. Other content may be added throughout the year.
* Ability to purchase trainer kits for all MOC and MSDN Training courses. Trainer kits are available to purchase for a low cost from your local fulfillment center.
* Exam discounts. Trainers receive a 45 percent discount on certification exams in countries where the exam cost is equivalent to US$125. In countries that already enjoy an exam discount price, MCTs will receive a 20 percent discount.
* Courseware support. Trainers can use a special instructional support alias to ask questions or report problems regarding MOC or MSDN Training courseware components. This support service can assist you with classroom setup problems, lab issues, content clarification, or other matters related to the courseware materials. Coverage is worldwide, although problems and resolutions are English-language only.
* Exclusive access to the private MCT Web site and the monthly MCT Flash newsletter. The private Web site and MCT Flash newsletter provide timely updates on MCT program announcements, Microsoft certification and courseware information, trainer events, and special promotions.
* Special offers for the MCT community. Many products and services are offered free of charge or at a discount for MCTs. These special offers are kept up-to-date on the private MCT Web site.
* Private MCT newsgroups on the Internet. The newsgroups allow you to share training tips and tricks and exchange information with Microsoft Training and Certification and other MCTs.
* Invitations to regional and national Microsoft events. These events include various trainer-readiness events, both regional and international. Attending these events will help you stay ahead with Microsoft technology.
* Microsoft Certified Trainer logo. The MCT logo and other materials allow you to identify yourself to Microsoft CTECs and students.
Section 3: How to Become an MCT
This section outlines the steps involved in becoming an MCT. If you are interested in becoming an MCT, you should read this Microsoft Certified Trainer Program Guide and the MCT agreement completely before beginning the application process. If you have questions about any of the procedures, refer to http://www.microsoft.com/training/worldsites for information about how to contact a Regional Education Service Center for assistance in your region.
To become an MCT, you must:
* Acquire a premier Microsoft Certified Professional credential;
* Attend a MOC or MSDN Training course;
* Prove your instructional presentation skills; and
* Apply and pay the appropriate fee.
Acquire a premier Microsoft Certified Professional credential
You must acquire one of the following credentials before you apply to be an MCT: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Microsoft Windows(r) 2000, Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD), Microsoft Certified Solution Developer for Microsoft .NET, or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) on Microsoft SQL Server( 2000. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that MCTs have a broad and up-to-date technical base of skills from which to teach.
See the Microsoft Training and Certification Web site (http://microsoft.com/traincert/mcp) for more information on acquiring these credentials.
Attend a Microsoft course
You must attend a classroom presentation of a MOC or MSDN Training course taught by an MCT at a Microsoft CTEC. (Note: A trainer readiness course delivered at an IT Academy Regional Center is acceptable.) This course must be at least three days in length, and you must attend this course within 12 months prior to your application to the MCT program. You will submit the course completion certificate with your application. The course completion certificate must include the course name, the course number, the date you attended the course, and a signature by the trainer.
The purpose of this requirement is so that you can observe a Microsoft course in practice. Microsoft CTECs are certified to provide the proper equipment and student environment. Attending the course will allow you to observe the course flow and timing, complete the course labs, observe student and instructor interactions, and listen to questions and answers.
We recommend that you locate a Microsoft CTEC that employs an MCT with two or more years of experience teaching Microsoft courses. You may choose any course, but we recommend that it is a course you plan to teach.
Prove your instructional presentation skills as a technical trainer
To demonstrate that you possess instructional presentation skills, you must indicate on your MCT application that you have completed one of the following requirements. Include the required supporting documentation along with your MCT application, as outlined below. Choose one of the following methods:
* Provide evidence of your Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+) certification from CompTIA. This is a cross-industry certification that validates that a technical instructor has attained a standard of excellence in the training industry. CTT+ consists of two tests: a computer-based test available at both VUE and Prometric testing centers and a video submission. Please refer to the CTT+ handbook found at http://www.comptia.org for instructions. Include your CTT+ Certificate with your MCT application. For more information about the CTT+ Program, contact CompTIA at:
- http://www.comptia.org/aboutus/contact.htm
- cttplus@comptia.org
* Prove that you have passed an instructional presentation skills or train-the-trainer course that has been pre-approved by Microsoft. Include your course completion certificate from the presentation skills course you attended with your MCT application. For information about approved instructional presentation skills courses or special country requirements, visit the MCT public Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/mct.
* Prove that you are an experienced technical trainer by including with your MCT application a certified instructor credential from any of the following vendors:
* Caldera
* Cisco Systems
* Citrix
* Novell
* Oracle
Complete the MCT application
Complete the MCT online application, which you can complete by using the MCT Enrollment tool on the MCP private site (https://partnering.one.microsoft.com/mcp). Your electronic signature validates your acceptance of the terms and conditions of the MCT agreement.
Your application will not be considered complete unless it is accompanied by appropriate documentation, as described above, and any applicable fees. Incomplete applications will not be processed. Allow two weeks for processing. When your application has been approved, you will be notified by e-mail, you will receive a Welcome Kit, and you will be granted access to the private MCT Web site.
Section 4: Preparing to Teach a Course
Once you are certified as an MCT, you may teach any MOC or MSDN Training course for which you are prepared. This section discusses the basic steps you should take to prepare to teach any Microsoft course. In addition, each course has its own specific preparation information, included with the trainer kit. To locate the course preparation checklist for a specific course, check the private MCT Web site, ask your Microsoft CTEC for assistance, or contact your Regional Education Service Center (http://www.microsoft.com/training/worldsites) for information.
The trainer kit
Every Microsoft course has an accompanying Microsoft trainer kit. The trainer kits are identical to the student kits and will contain some or all of the following additional components:
* Course preparation checklist. This checklist provides the key activities you should complete to prepare technically and instructionally for this specific course.
* Classroom setup guide. This document describes how to set up the instructor and student computers.
* Course delivery guide. Each course module has its own instructor delivery guide, which contains preparation notes and resources.
* Trainer Materials CD. This media contains the Microsoft PowerPoint(r) course presentation slides, course setup files, and additional resources, such as white papers, and course-specific documents, as applicable. It also contains the student CD files in a separate folder.
* Trainer Preparation Presentation. This presentation may be included on the Trainer Materials CD and consists of the Microsoft courseware developers discussing the courseware and the product.
Prepare yourself technically
Attend or review the course. Attending the MOC or MSDN Training course you hope to deliver is an excellent way to gain technical skills. The course you choose to attend should be delivered by an experienced MCT who has at least two years of experience delivering Microsoft courses. It is recommended that you bring your own trainer kit to the course. If you cannot attend a course, review the materials and complete the labs in your own setting.
Attend or review higher-level or complimentary courses. Attend a course or review the materials for courses with content that complements or provides deeper technical information to supplement your technical knowledge.
Learn by Doing. There are many ways to practice the skills you want to teach.
* Work with the product. Use your imagination. Envision a scenario. Plan the scenario. Implement the scenario. Install and configure, try the various features, create error situations, and troubleshoot them. Ask yourself questions about the process. Push the boundaries. Be conscious when you write a line of code or click the Next button.
* Consulting in a real-world situation provides excellent experience. Be aware that a single consulting project may not expose all aspects of a product.
