<code>doclevel</code> is set, the method applies <code>FUN</code> onto each element
of <code>object</code> and returns the filtered <code>object</code>; otherwise
<code>FUN</code> is applied to <code>object</code> itself, i.e., the
filter is applied onto the <code>object</code>. Note that metadata is
automatically passed to <code>FUN</code>. The function <code>FUN</code> must
return a Boolean value.</dd>
