A buffer overflow in the implementation of <b>Point to Point Tunneling Protocol</b> allows attackers to cause any Windows 2000 or Windows XP servers to crash. <b>A patch is available</b> for the bug, which received a "critical" rating from Microsoft. The company also warned of a bug in Windows 2000 that could allow an attacker to sabotage the system via a Trojan horse. With the two new warnings, Microsoft has issued 64 alerts this year.<br /><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/b.gif" width=1 height=5><br><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/i/itu/arrow_blue.gif" width="8" height="10" border="0"><a href="http://cl.com.com/Click?q=fe-xkIgQwgDVMPtpZpmPi4jO0ThvOFR" class="nd"><b class="m1">Read full story</b></a><br /><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/b.gif" width=1 height=5><br><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/i/itu/arrow_blue.gif" width="8" height="10" border="0"><a href="http://cl.com.com/Click?q=13-NxSZI3XBQSFC3ZhOOKkVI-Dy7PRR" class="nd"><b class="m1">Security guide aims to lock up agencies</b></a><br /><!-- /Section 3 head & dek --></td><td width="10"><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/b.gif" width="10" height="1" border="0"></td></tr></table><!-- /Section 3 --><!-- Section 3 --><table cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 border=0 width="428"><tr valign=top><td width=7 rowspan=2><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/b.gif" width=7 height=1></td><td width=100% colspan="2"><img src="http://techupdate.cnet.com/b.gif" width=1 height=5></td></tr><tr><td valign="top" class="v2" width="100%"><!-- Section 3 gif --><!--<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="215" align="right"><tr><td> <img src="http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/zdnn/cm/2002/10/103002rglaser_pq2.jpg" width="215" height="149" border="0"> </td></tr></table>--><!-- /Section 3 gif --><!-- Section 3 head & dek --><a href="http://cl.com.com/Click?q=29-Sg_rIjMlxjgMfOZCDbDBtPQJQ79R" class="nd"><b class="a4">Hyperthreading a turnoff, so far</b></a><br />Hyperthreading--<b>Intel's a performance-enhancing technology</b> that lets one chip act something like two--has been available on workstations since April, but it's mostly been inactive. <b>HP</b> and <b>Dell</b>, among other PC manufacturers, have been shipping their systems with the function turned off.
