A massive collection of Linux HOWTO documents is usually included with each Linux distribution. Red Hat Linux 5.0 comes with nearly 200 documents, requiring more than 6 MB in compressed form! HOWTO documents are comprehensive, detailed guides to solving problems or for obtaining a quick education on specialized aspects of using Linux.

To read one of the regular HOWTO documents (compressed text, not .html, .sgml, .dvi, or .ps), use the zless command, followed by the path and name of the document, like this:

# zless /usr/doc/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.gz

Table C.1 provides a quick summary of each compressed HOWTO.
