Bill Ball, author of Sams Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours, is a technical writer, editor, and magazine journalist. He broke down and bought a PC after using the Macintosh series of computers from Apple for nearly 10 years, but didn’t join the Dark Side—he started using Linux! He has published more than a dozen articles in magazines such as Computer Shopper and MacTech Magazine, and first started editing books for Que in 1986. An avid fly fisherman, he builds bamboo fly rods, and fishes on the nearby Potomac River when he’s not driving his vintage MG sports cars. He lives at Aquia Harbor in Stafford County, Virginia.

Jan Walter is a freelance computer consultant living in Vancouver, Canada. He specializes in providing solutions to small and mid-sized businesses, and has supported and worked with Linux, Windows NT, and OS/2 since 1993. Other work includes consulting ISPs on supporting non-Windows based clients, performance optimization of programs, and CGI programming. He can be contacted via email at jwalter@rogers.wave.ca.

Steve Shah is a systems administrator at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology at the University of California, Riverside. He received his B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Creative Writing, and is currently working on his M.S. in Computer Science there as well. Occasionally, Steve leaves his console to pursue analog activities such as DJing and spending time with his better half, Heidi.

Sriranga Veeraraghavan works in the area of network management at Cisco Systems, Inc. He enjoys developing software using Java, C, Perl, and Shell for both Linux and Solaris. His pastimes include playing Marathon and debugging routing problems in his heterogenous network at home. Sriranga graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1997 with an Engineering degree and is pursuing further studies at Stanford University.

Tad Bohlsen is currently the technology manager for a non-profit organization, and also a consultant on technology issues. In the past he has served as a UNIX system administrator and shell script developer, and worked with companies like Juno Online Services and HBO.

David Pitts is a senior consultant with BEST Consulting. Currently on assignment with The Boeing Company, David is a system administrator, programmer, Webmaster, and author. David can be reached at dpitts@mk.net or kpitts@bestnet.com. David lines in Everett, Washington, with his wonderful wife Dana.

Thanks are due to the following people at Macmillan: Theresa Ball, Lynette Quinn, Tracy Williams, Kate Welsh, and Jeff Koch. Thanks also to John Herlig at Gargoyle’s in Stafford, Va. for his fresh roast and Yemen mocha. A big note of appreciation is also due to the XFree86 folks in Herndon, Va., without whose efforts many Linux users would not enjoy a graphical interface to the best operating system in the world.
