  PROBLEM: how do we may correctly differentiate between
  versions of gettext with and without the autopoint script.
  AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION macro is not defined in versions of
  gettext, that do not provide the autopoint script (<0.11.3)

- don't program 0xff into Atmel's memory if --erase is given.
