INTRODUCTIONSURVAN is a package for non-parametric survival analysis. SURVANperforms the following calculations: Kaplan-Meier estimation ofsurvival functions with confidence limits on estimates and quantiles.Log rank and Gehan-Breslow tests of the equality of survival functionsof several groups, optional over several strata. Proportional hazardsmodel estimation of coefficients and underlying hazard and survivalfunction. Logistic regression estimation. SURVAN also computesfrequency distributions and condescriptive statistics, which may beuseful in setting up the above. HOW IT WAS WRITTENSURVAN was largely written in FLECS+, a Fortran preprocessor similarin spirit to ratfor. The resulting ugly Fortran was polished with theToolpack tools, pol and decs. We wish that we could claim that itpassed the pfort portability test, but pfort runs out of steam onanything the size of SURVAN. LEGALITIES (BRIEF) We want to make this program as widely available as possible.Hence, executable code derived from the source provided, the sourceitself, and the accompanying documentation may be freely copied anddistributed provided that this copyright section accompanies suchcopies. We encourage the distribution of this code on bulletin boardsand as shareware. Modifications and improvements to the code can similarly be freelycopied and distributed. Barry Brown would appreciate a copy of anysuch improvements for incorporation into later versions of SURVAN. Source code may be extracted and used for any non-commercialpurpose. Non-commercial means that at most a modest distribution feeis charged, as shareware. We would appreciate acknowledgment of uschuse of our code. Commercial use of the source code requires written permission fromthe Department of Biomathematics at the above address. Our policy isgenerally to grant such permission provided appropriate credit isgiven to us in the documentation. Packing ListThe following files constitute the source of this application. Foreach file, the output of the Unix command sum and wc is given. Thefirst number under sum is a 16 bit check sum that can be used toverify the accuracy of the reconstructed file on a Unix system. Thesecond number is the number of blocks occupied by the file; this isnot very useful because it varies from system to system. The wcnumbers are (1) number of lines in the file, (2) number of words, and(3) number of characters. Filesmachspec.<machine> contain the Fortran that is machine specific:macspec.MAC is code for Language Systems Fortran on the Macintosh;machspec.MSDOS is intended for Microsoft Fortran on a MSDOS machine;macspec.UNIX will compile correctly under a number of Unix Fortrancompilers; macspec.VAX is intended for VMS Fortran. The machine dependence arises from an elaborate model of input andoutput used by the authors. OBTAINING SOURCE AND OTHER VERSIONSThe Fortran source of our routines be obtained by internet or Bitnetmail from statlib. For information on statlib, send a message whosebody is 'send index' to statlib@temper.stat.cmu.edu.The Fortran source code, and MS-DOS PC and MacIntosh executables arealso available via anonymous ftp from mdaali.cancer.utexas.edu(129.106.1.6).
