It is the standard printer control system in FreeBSD. This chapterintroduces the LPD spooling system, often simply called <bclass="APPLICATION">LPD, and will guide you through its configuration.

If you are already familiar with LPD or another printerspooling system, you may wish to skip to section <ahref="printing-intro-setup.html">Setting up the spooling system.

LPD controls everything about a host's printers. It isresponsible for a number of things:

It controls access to attached printers and printers attached to other hosts on thenetwork.

It enables users to submit files to be printed; these submissions are known as <spanclass="emphasis">jobs.

It prevents multiple users from accessing a printer at the same time by maintaining aqueue for each printer.

It can print header pages (alsoknown as banner or <spanclass="emphasis">burst pages) so users can easily findjobs they have printed in a stack of printouts.

It takes care of communications parameters for printers connected on serial ports.

It can send jobs over the network to a LPD spooler onanother host.

It can run special filters to format jobs to be printed for various printer languagesor printer capabilities.

It can account for printer usage.

Through a configuration file (/etc/printcap), and byproviding the special filter programs, you can enable the LPDsystem to do all or some subset of the above for a great variety of printer hardware.

9.2.1 Why YouShould Use the Spooler

If you are the sole user of your system, you may be wondering why you should botherwith the spooler when you do not need access control, header pages, or printeraccounting. While it is possible to enable direct access to a printer, you should use thespooler anyway since:

LPD prints jobs in the background; you do not have to waitfor data to be copied to the printer.

LPD can conveniently run a job to be printed throughfilters to add date/time headers or convert a special file format (such as a <bclass="APPLICATION">TeX DVI file) into a format the printer will understand. You willnot have to do these steps manually.

Many free and commercial programs that provide a print feature usually expect to talkto the spooler on your system. By setting up the spooling system, you will more easilysupport other software you may later add or already have.

<table summary="Footer navigation table" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0"cellspacing="0">

<a href="printing.html"accesskey="P">Prev

<a href="index.html"accesskey="H">Home

<a href="printing-intro-setup.html"accesskey="N">Next

Printing

<a href="printing.html"accesskey="U">Up

Basic Setup

This, and other documents, can be downloaded from <ahref="ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/">ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/.

For questions about FreeBSD, read the <ahref="http://www.FreeBSD.org/docs.html">documentation before contacting <<ahref="mailto:questions@FreeBSD.org">questions@FreeBSD.org>.
For questions about this documentation, e-mail <<ahref="mailto:doc@FreeBSD.org">doc@FreeBSD.org>.
