Handy and Rich Murphey.</i> <div class="SECT1"><h1 class="SECT1"><a id="LINUXEMU-SYNOPSIS" name="LINUXEMU-SYNOPSIS">10.1Synopsis</a></h1><p>FreeBSD provides binary compatibility with several other <spanclass="TRADEMARK">UNIX</span>® like operating systems, including Linux. At thispoint, you may be asking yourself why exactly, does FreeBSD need to be able to run Linuxbinaries? The answer to that question is quite simple. Many companies and developersdevelop only for Linux, since it is the latest ``hot thing'' in the computing world. Thatleaves the rest of us FreeBSD users bugging these same companies and developers to putout native FreeBSD versions of their applications. The problem is, that most of thesecompanies do not really realize how many people would use their product if there wereFreeBSD versions too, and most continue to only develop for Linux. So what is a FreeBSDuser to do? This is where the Linux binary compatibility of FreeBSD comes into play.</p><p>In a nutshell, the compatibility allows FreeBSD users to run about 90% of all Linuxapplications without modification. This includes applications such as <bclass="APPLICATION"><span class="TRADEMARK">StarOffice</span>™</b>, the Linuxversion of <b class="APPLICATION"><span class="TRADEMARK">Netscape</span>®</b>, <bclass="APPLICATION"><span class="TRADEMARK">Adobe</span>® <spanclass="TRADEMARK">Acrobat</span>®</b>, <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">RealPlayer</span>®</b> 5 and 7, <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">VMware</span>™</b>, <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">Oracle</span>®</b>, <b class="APPLICATION"><spanclass="TRADEMARK">WordPerfect</span>®</b>, <b class="APPLICATION">Doom</b>, <bclass="APPLICATION">Quake</b>, and more. It is also reported that in some situations,Linux binaries perform better on FreeBSD than they do under Linux.</p><p>There are, however, some Linux-specific operating system features that are notsupported under FreeBSD.
