A revision tag refers toeither a particular line of FreeBSD development, or a specific point in time. The firsttype are called ``branch tags'', and the second type are called ``release tags''.</p><div class="SECT2"><h2 class="SECT2"><a id="AEN41279" name="AEN41279">A.6.1 Branch Tags</a></h2><p>All of these, with the exception of <var class="LITERAL">HEAD</var> (which is always avalid tag), only apply to the <tt class="FILENAME">src/</tt> tree. The <ttclass="FILENAME">ports/</tt>, <tt class="FILENAME">doc/</tt>, and <ttclass="FILENAME">www/</tt> trees are not branched.</p><div class="VARIABLELIST"><dl><dt>HEAD</dt><dd><p>Symbolic name for the main line, or FreeBSD-CURRENT. Also the default when no revisionis specified.</p><p>In <b class="APPLICATION">CVSup</b>, this tag is represented by a <varclass="LITERAL">.</var> (not punctuation, but a literal <var class="LITERAL">.</var>character).</p><div class="NOTE"><blockquote class="NOTE"><p><b>Note:</b> In CVS, this is the default when no revision tag is specified. The release engineering process is documented in more detail by the <ahref="../../../../releng/" target="_top">Release Engineering Information</a> and <ahref="../../../../doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/releng/release-proc.html"target="_top">Release Process</a> documents. The <tt class="FILENAME">src</tt> tree usestag names that start with <var class="LITERAL">RELENG_</var> tags. The <ttclass="FILENAME">ports</tt> and <tt class="FILENAME">doc</tt> trees use tags whose namesbegin with <var class="LITERAL">RELEASE</var> tags.
