<H2>Creating MP3 Files </H2>
<P>There are many many ways of converting your existing CD collection to =
MP3s. I=20
don=92t pretend to know them all, but I can tell you what worked for me =
and my=20
Windows-based PC.</P>
<P>I have around 50 CDs at home. With an average of a dozen songs per CD =
this=20
equates to around 600 tracks. To rip the CDs and convert them to MP3s I =
used=20
CDEX, which is an excellent shareware program found at:<BR><A=20
href=3D"http://www.cdex.n3.net/" =
target=3D_top>http://www.cdex.n3.net/</A> </P>
<P>CDEX has numerous useful options. This is what I did:</P>
<UL>
<LI>Normalize was turned on. Because different CDs are recorded at =
different=20
levels, it=92s very useful to have all of the tracks set to the same =
volume=20
level. Saves you from having to keep running to the volume control.=20
<LI>Bitrate was set to 160 kb/s. I did some experiments with different =
bitrates and found this to offer the best audio quality / filesize =
tradeoff.=20
At least for my ears.=20
<LI>File name was <artist name> - <track name>.mp3<BR>For =
example:=20
Enya =96 Memory of Trees.mp3<BR>Then when the MP3 player displays the =
filename=20
on the LCD display, it makes a lot of sense.=20
<LI>Use LAME for MP3 encoding, and use CDDB to save you having to type =
in all=20
the track names by hand. (Make sure you=92re connected to the internet =
for CDDB=20
accesses to work). </LI></UL>
<P><BR>Then there are a few other programs I found useful.</P>
<P>MP3Gain <BR><A href=3D"http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain/"=20
target=3D_top>http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain/</A> <BR>is a program to =
normalize=20
your MP3 files. It uses a fairly advanced human hearing model to =
calculate the=20
volume of each track. And it=92s quite fast. I ran it over my MP3 files =
as a=20
=93sanity check=94 after I was done using CDEX. It's also a great help =
if you forget=20
to turn on normalize when using CDEX.</P>
<P>To play MP3 files on your PC, WinAmp is justifiably popular:<BR><A=20

<P>To organize your MP3s, sort them, edit ID3 tags, etc, I use =
EZ-Playlist,=20
which is a WinAmp plug-in:<BR><A=20

<P><BR>These are all free or shareware programs. It=92s amazing what =

do.</P>
<P>Please note that I don't condone illegal sharing of copyrighted =
music. Whilst=20
I totally disagree with the heavy-handed tactics being used by the RIAA=20
(slamming 12 year-old children with lawsuits is both ridiculous and =
offensive in=20
my opinion) I do agree with the artists' needs to be paid for their =
work. The=20
tools I've suggested above will allow you to convert your own CDs to the =
MP3=20
