will add nothing to system cost.

high-bandwidth consumer electronics

When it is available, will FireWire replace USB?

No. The two technologies target different
peripheral connections and will therefore be
complementary. When FireWire becomes more
prevalent, in about two years, it will be up
to individual consumers what features they
want on their new PCs. It seems likely that,
in the future, PCs will have both USB and
FireWire connection ports.

Who created USB anyway?

USB was developed by a group of seven
companies that saw a need for an interconnect
to enable the growth of the blossoming
Computer Telephony Integration Industry. The
seven promoters of the USB definition are; <a

What are the Intellectual Property issues with
USB, is there a license, what does it cost, what
is the "Reciprocal Covenent Agreement"
I've heard about?

USB is royalty free, the promoters that
created the specification agreed to allow
anyone to build products around the spec
without any charge. The promoters have signed
an IP agreement which promises there will be
no lawsuits based on any IP incorporated
within the specification. The <a

return to USB-IF administration in order to
go on record as having seen and understood
the agreement. The Reciprocal Covenant is
made available to anyone(USB-IF member or
not) to clarify the USB license agreement.

What is the USB-IF?

USB Implementers Forum is a support
organization formed by the seven promoters of
USB to help speed development of high quality
compatible devices using USB. The
organization is administered by personel
supplied by the promoter companies and is
funded by membership fees.

The organization is non profit and will
use all funds for promotion of USB products
or technical education of implementers of USB
products. Most of the activities USB
Implementers Forum sponsors will be organized
to be breakeven events. Large presence shows
such as Comdex consume most of the
organizations budget.

Free Technical support

Whitepapers, design guides, app notes

Both OHCI,
and <a

are USB spec compatable and provide an

the USB spec.

There is a mail list set up for USB-IF
members that allows discussion and
interaction between companies. There is no
monitoring or censorship accept the guidline
to use the list for USB related
communication. This is not a real news group
since it operates through email and it does
not preserve history for all to see. If you

Where can we get EMC testing peripherals?

In order to get EMC compliance it is
necessary for all external connectors of the
equipment to be connected to a peripheral
device and that device must be exercised
during testing. Both low speed and high speed
testing is also required. Any of the USB-IF
members that have shown prototypes at our
developers conferences or trade shows would
be suitable. The evaluation kit that comes
with the Intel PDK would be suitable and is
also available seperately. Even a passive
resistive load at the end of a normal length
of cable would be suitable if software to
exercise the cable was used.

50-200 meter extension (possibly fiber) for these
large customers that need the capability?
peripheral interface, 200 meters seems like a
rather large desktop. Still many members
companies have talked about longer distance
applications and are thinking of creating the
