Using RFID would give us the benefit of having multiple competitors on the same circuit at the same time, and also enable us to place a reader 1/2 way up the hill so as to send back (ideally Via RS232) their split time.<br>>The timing itself would be handled via infra red beams placed perpendicular to that section of track.<p>Sounds more like an RF/DC (Radio Frequency Data Collection) application which could be handled by any of a number of RF modems such as those made by Proxim, Zeus, and others.
