{cmd:set persistfv} specifies whether floating viewers persist between
sessions of Stata or when saving and loading a windowing preference.  By
definition, persist means that a viewer's particular location, size, and
windowing state can be saved as a preference.  Whenever the preference is 
recalled, such as by starting Stata or by explicitly loading a windowing 
preference, the viewers will be automatically created with those settings.
This command applies only to Windows computers.

Viewers that are not floating{hline 2}that are docked inside the main Stata
window{hline 2}are always persistent so that the layout of other windows is
maintained.  These viewers that are docked inside the main Stata window will
always be automatically created or destroyed as part of a windowing
preference.

{pstd}
Viewers that are floating when a windowing preference is loaded, however, are
not destroyed when the new preference is loaded.  This is the case whether
{cmd: persistfv} is set or not. The reason for this behavior is
that floating viewers occur by default when a new topic is referenced.  As
such, they typically are showing topics that are relevant to the workspace. 
Not closing them automatically simply prevents losing this potentially relevant
information.


{pstd}
{cmd:on} specifies that floating viewers also be saved between sessions 
of Stata or when saving windowing preferences.
{cmd:off} specifies that floating viewers not be saved between sessions
of Stata or when saving windowing preferences.
The default value of {cmd:persistfv} is {cmd:off}.
