I suspect thatthese capabilities will be added to Web search engines that currently usefree-text indexing to track down relevant pages.</P><H4><A NAME="ch04_ 14">Summary</A></H4><P>In this chapter I looked at what supporting XML actually means. Themain focus has been on the software that will be required, although discussingthis has also given an insight into the tasks (and the "people skills") that willbe called for.</P><P>I reviewed the process of authoring XML documents. In addition tohaving different possible styles of editing software, I showed that an array ofsupport packages is required to maintain the XML DTD, style sheets, and links.</P><P>Moving on to the processing of XML, I discussed the conversion processesthat can create XML documents out of other types of information,XML-to-XML transfers, and the creation of "delivery" formats from an XML source. Ifollowed this up with a review of the publishing options currently offered by XML.</P><P>Finally, I sketched out the requirements for managing a real-life XMLsite. These are centered on document management issues, such as versioncontrol and security.</P><P>Part II, "XML in Detail," is designed to give a fuller picture of what is inthe XML specification.
