      <P>Many websites that list a BitTorrent download also list a plain =

      HTTP or FTP link for the same file for those people who don't use=20
      BitTorrent. The files are identical. Why shouldn't a BitTorrent =
client be=20
      able to download from either source, putting all the parts =
together into=20
      one complete file (and even sharing out the pieces it gets from =
other=20
      sources to its Peers as they're validated!)=20
      <P>There are several advantages to this to this addition:=20
      <UL>
        <LI>There's always an "unchoked seed" where anybody can get =
started. It=20
        sometimes can take awhile to get a full piece so the tit-for-tat =
sharing=20
        can start working.=20
        <LI>Speed. I frequently get a download rate from a single =
HTTP/FTP=20
        server that is faster than a BitTorrent download with many peers =
and=20
        seeds (and far faster than any single peer). And that's not even =
using=20
        the "acceleration" in GetRight to download from multiple =
HTTP/FTP=20
        servers at once.=20
        <LI>It doesn't break or change anything for clients that don't =
recognize=20
        it. And clients that don't recognize it would still get the =
benefit from=20
        peers able to send them pieces originally from a HTTP/FTP =
server.=20
        <LI>Compared to the size of a file, the overhead for the extra =
bit in=20
        the .torrent files is miniscule.=20
        <LI>Some small changes to the piece selection methods can really =
reduce=20
        the number of connections and restarts needed on the HTTP/FTP =
side.=20
        <P></P>
        <LI>I've seen another <A=20
        href=3D"http://www.bittornado.com/docs/webseed-spec.txt">HTTP =
Seeding</A>=20
        proposal. A disadvantage of its method that it requires people =
other=20
        than BitTorrent client authors to do something :) Since just =
about every=20
        HTTP/FTP server already allows resuming, all existing servers =
can be=20
        used without any changes with the method GetRight is using.=20
        <P></P>
        <LI>While it would work better if the .torrent format was =
extended to=20
        include just a list of mirrors, it can be done without any =
changes to=20
        either the .torrent format, or HTTP/FTP servers. It just takes =
more=20
        clicking for a user...with GetRight, you have to click on the =
.torrent=20
        file as well as any mirrors you want. <BR><I>I always think it's =
a good=20
        sign if something can be done without making anybody else change =
