On Monday April 16th 2007 a crazed gunman by the name of Seung-Hui Cho went on a shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University, injuring sixty-one people, killing twenty-seven students and five faculty members

The events

According to Wikipedia the Virgina Tech shooting encompasses two separate shootings. The first occurred at West Ambler Johnson Hall, early on the morning of the sixteenth of April. A female student and a male student were shot in that dormitory. It was speculated that the female may have been the perpetrator’s girlfriend. The male victim apparently was shot trying to aid the female. Approximately two hours after the initial shooting, Cho entered Norris hall chaining the front doors and proceeded to go to the 2nd floor of the building. His shooting rampage included attacking five classes, killing twenty-five students and all five faculty members. It is estimated that Cho used anywhere from 175 to 225 rounds of ammunition in the attack. Cho committed suicide as police were closing in.

Mourners gathered on April 21st for the funerals of many of the 32 victims killed at Virginia Tech, and students extended a note of forgiveness to the gunman responsible for the massacre.?A few tributes to Cho Seung-hui, who shot his victims then himself, have been added to a growing memorial of stones in the center of the sprawling university in southwest Virginia, where knots of weeping students continue to gather.

“I just wanted you to know that I am not mad at you. I don’t hate you,” read a note among flowers at a stone marker labeled for Cho. “I am so sorry that you could find no help or comfort.” The note, one of three expressing sorrow and sympathy for the gunman, a deeply disturbed English major, was signed: “With all my love, Laura.”

Marilee Jones, resigned Monday as dean of admissions at MIT.

Marilee Jones, MIT’s dean of admissions who has spoken out nationally against the craze over beefing up teens’ resumes, has resigned after 28 years at the school for misrepresenting her academic degrees, university officials said today.

Jones listed on her resume that she had degrees from Albany Medical College, Union College, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but she had no degrees from any of those schools, said MIT chancellor Phillip Clay.

In a statement posted on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s website, Jones said she did not “have the courage to correct my resume” when she applied in 1998 for her my current job, where she has become perhaps the most prominent admissions director in the country. Jones has kept a popular blog and spoken widely about restoring the joys of youth to young people obsessed with their resumes.

“I am deeply sorry for this and for disappointing so many in the MIT community and beyond who supported me, believed in me, and who have given me extraordinary opportunities,” Jones said in the statement. “I especially apologize to the Institute’s leadership and to my extraordinary staff, whom I have every confidence will continue to deliver on the Institute’s mission.”

Jones did not say what triggered a review of her resume. She started at MIT as an administrative assistant.

Stuart Schmill has been named interim director of admissions while the school searches for a permanent replacement, according to a statement from the school also posted on the MIT website.

“This is a sad and unfortunate event,” said Daniel E. Hastings, dean for undergraduate education, said in the university’s statement. “But the integrity of the Institute is our highest priority, and we cannot tolerate this kind of behavior.”

The MIT admissions process involves dozens of faculty and staff and will continue without disruption for the incoming class, Hastings said.

Marilee Jones,

pyf & Fang

Smile

Laugher is a sort of body language of our human beings. Laughers are different, of which smile is the most charming and meaningful form, so that someone describes smile as the name card of a city’s image. This figure of speech is fair enough.

Smile is a beautiful angel. When smiling, you gently open your lips so that the teeth are slightly shown. Your mouth curves upwards to get the facial muscle slowly moving and finally stretched. The face, then, is as beautiful as a blooming flower, in that the highlights of your face are fully revealed before us when you smile.

Smile is the gentle spring breeze. We need smile in our life. We cannot live without smile. Imagine you enter the office and your colleagues give you a warm smile. You will feel quite comfortable. Imagine you do shopping at shops; the shop assistant welcomes you with a big smile and proactively services you. You will feel quite pleased. Imagine you travel on a plane and the air hostess offers you a cup of hot tea or some delicious light refreshments with a tender smile. Your heart will feel warm at that moment. When you see cordial smiles everywhere, you will feel good.

What’s Happiness

Perhaps, we can define happiness like this. Happiness is to get what you badly need. A hungry Buddhist won’t feel happy when served a world-known Peking roasted duck, because that’s not what he wants. What he wants is probably two steamed breads and a dish of fried bean sprouts. An old man living alone in the country often receives money and parcels from his son in the city, which is envied by the neighbours. However, what he really wants is to spend his time with his family. A solitary traveler who?hurries on his way under the scorching sun needs nothing so badly but a shelter from a tree, a gust of cooling wind, a palm-leaf fan or the mouth of a spring instead of an expensive fur coat. Far out at sea, where there are not only rich resources that feed all kinds of creatures but also numerous treasures and enormous wealth, a sailor may urgently need some ordinary fresh water only.

It is expected to generate the largest number of visitors in the history of the world’s fairs in terms of gross numbers, although it will have a tough time matching the per capita visit rate of the 1967 Montreal World’s Fair, attended by 50 million people at a time when Canada’s total population was a mere 20 million.
