JustPoll was designed with ease of use in mind.
Thus there isn't much to explain in the way of
how you need to use it. There are three compnents
to JustPoll:
QuestionEditor is where you would usually
start. It allows you to edit the questions
that you would like to ask ahead of time. Of
course you could always modify them from the
server panel, but if you want to prepare early,
you can use the QuestionEditor.
PollClient is the students' view of the system.
When first launched it will ask for an network
address, or a hostname of the computer running
the server. If the server is not running the
client will fail to connect. Once the client
is connected it will wait for the server to
send it the question. The interface is very
simple and a picture is worth a thousand words,
so just take a look.
PollServer is the server panel. This is what
the instructor would run. PollServer has two
main functions. On the left you can see the same
controls as in the QuestionEditor. Here you
can make up new questions or edit ones prepared
earlier. You can open previously saved questions
from the File menu. The questions are saved in
a binary format called the JPQ (Just Poll
Questions). To post a question simply wait for
a client to connect then hit the "Post Question"
button in the lower left corner. The right
half of the server panel is used for displaying
results of the polling. Once a question is timed
out you can see a nice little bar graph of the
responses. The two dropdown boxes in the uppper
right control which question and which set of
results you would like to see. If you are using
Projector Reporting these will also control
what your audience would see.
In order to use Projector reporting you need
to follow these steps:
1. Make sure your computer has a dual video
card. If you have a laptop, this means
that you have a VGA connector on the
back of your computer.
2. Connect the projector to the second
output of your video card (the VGA port on
the back of your laptop).
3. Extend your desktop so that the projector
is added to the right of your desktop.
4. Run PollServer with the -p option:
c:\PATH_TO_JAVA\java.exe -jar PollServer.jar -p
If you are using Microsoft Windows XP you can
skip steps 3 and 4 and run
PollServer_ProjectorReporting.exe
instead. This script written in AutoIt v2
will extend your desktop automatically and
revert the settings back when done. This will
not work on a Mac.
FAQ
Q1. How come I can ask a question, then
change it, ask it again and still
have the results from the first time
displayed?
A1. This is a design issue. There is one
big array (technically a vector) in the
backend that contains all the questions
and their results. If you edit the
question it gets edited in this array,
so when the display panel requests what
questions have which results it sees what
is in the array, not what happened in real
life. Basically don't do it and you'll be
fine. If you have a better design idea
e-mail me. I'll be glad to take a look at it.
Q2. Projector Reporting isn't working. HELP!!!
A2. This is probably the most useful and the
least tested part of JustPoll. It *should*
work under Microsoft Windows XP. I tested
it on Windows XP Pro SP2. Try following
the manual steps. If that's not working at
all, e-mail me and I'll try to take a look
at it.
Q3. Your stupid program blew up my computer!!
Why did you do this to me???!!!!
A3. While I feel sorry for you, I accept no
liability. Read COPYING.txt
Q4. I love this program. Can I send you a
postcard/e-mail/suggestion/a donation?
A4. I'd love to hear about how people are
using this software. Please e-mail me
at ipartola ]at[ clarku.edu
As far as donations go, I will not
accept any at this point.
Digitally yours,
Igor Partola
