In order to gain the most intelligence from your web data, it is important to know what files are available and what programs you can use to collect this information. The brick and mortar of your data mining analysis starts with your website data, more specifically several components that are used to create your server log files and other web-based databases, including transfer (access) logs, cookies, and forms.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{694}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=17></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3><B>Server Log Files</B></FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{695}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>When a visitor first accesses your website, that single request can generate multiple transactions, which get recorded in your log files. First there is a recorded transaction for the requested page, such as info.htm, and then there are multiple "hits" for each graphical (gif) image on that page. Almost all web servers generate these log files as ASCII comma-, space-, or tab-delimited text files. Almost every web server incorporates, at a minimum, these two files: a <I>transfer log,</I> which tells you what your visitors saw, and an <I>error log,</I> which tells you about disconnects. Most servers also support two additional log files, which can tell you from where your website visitors originated: <I>a referrer log,</I> which tells you how your visitors found you, and an <I>agent log,</I> which tells you what browsers they used.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{696}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>Depending on how your website is configured and what program you are using, your log files can be the starting point for finding out who your visitors and customers are. These files can assist you in finding where they came from and what "keywords" they used to find you, what path they followed through your website, and how long they stayed.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{697}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3><B><I>Transfer Log File</I></B></FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{698}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>One of the most important sources of information about your website visitors starts with your server transfer log file, also known as the access log. This is where every transaction between the server and browsers is recorded with a date and time, the domain name or IP address of the server making the request for each page on your site, the status of that request, and the number of bytes transferred to that requester. At the minimum, almost every server records some of this information.
