With costs such as these it is common for a justification of these expenditures to be made. One way of protecting these huge investments is through the monitoring of web traffic.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{217}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>The best—and sometimes only—way to glean that information in a usable format is with traffic analysis and monitoring software. The software runs the gamut in functionality and price, as tools range from free to upward of $100,000. On the low end, basic packages and downloadable utilities provide entry-level analysis for small- to medium-volume sites and intranets. These packages can tell you such information as how many visitors came to the site, the most- and least-requested pages, where visitors entered and exited, and other notable path analysis and historical trend data. High-volume websites involved in electronic retailing most likely will opt for more sophisticated high-dollar software that provides comprehensive analysis of traffic flow as well as detailed information about each visitor and their trek through the site. Knowing who enters—and who buys your product—can be critical to the success or failure of your electronic business.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{218}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>"Log file analyzers" do as their name suggests—they take information recorded by your server and summarize the data in an intelligible format. Most analyzers compile data into a database from which they can run reports; their speed is measured in terms of both loading data into the database and compiling the report. Certain programs load in real time by "sniffing" every packet and stuffing the database. Others load the log file into the database at off-peak times specified by the administrator. Complex commerce sites may also require analysis tools with the capabilities to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of marketing and advertising data. If a company runs an ad on three different websites, a tool should be able to compare how many people were referred from each site, or which links were most commonly selected.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{219}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>Lastly, for sites with search capabilities, some web analysis tools can report on which keywords visitors used, which sites have links to you and provide the majority of users, and which search engines provided the most valuable visitors. All of this information is readily available from log files. Since the first action for most visitors to a website is a search, it is sometimes very important to know what they're looking for. If you know that information along with where they're coming from, where they're going, and how long they will linger, then your site can truly become an effective marketing engine. The following is a partial listing of some of these web analysis tools, along with a discussion of some of their features and limitations:</FONT><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3 COLOR=#FFFF00><!-- break --></FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{21A}'/></FORM></P></TD></TR></TABLE><P><FONT SIZE=0 COLOR=WHITE></CENTER><A NAME="bottom"> </A><!-- netLibrary.com Copyright Notice --> </BODY></HTML>
