Several vendors, like Astra, are beginning to explore advanced forms of visualization such as link analysis. Some, like NetTracker and SurfReport, are taking advantage of the Web to deliver their results via thin client browser by writing their reports tools in Java. Hit traffic counts, the traditional measure of a website's effectiveness, is all but useless to advertisers. Instead of counting the number of times a page is viewed, they are more interested in tabulating every inline graphic, Common Gateway Interface (CGI) script, and Java class resulted in a click-through or sale. Advertisers need to know not only how many pages are viewed, but also how many people visit their website. These marketers need to know the demographics of their visitors, so they can sell ads. For starters they want to know who is accessing the website and where these visitors are coming from. Some of this information is available from log files, like referral information, but some is not.
