(See Figure 1-12.) As previously noted, GAs are optimization techniques and programs that use processes such as genetic selection, crossover, and mutation for the solution based on the concept of natural evolution. (See Figure 1-13.) For example, a GA in a data mining tool can be used to try thousands of settings and combinations of inputs in the fine-tuning of a neural network. For example, a GA can prune a very long file containing hundreds of variables down to only a few inputs for predicting sales.
