The IP address of visitors is the single best method of determining the number of individuals accessing your site. However, this can be misleading due to the fact that dial-up users are usually assigned "dynamic" IP addresses by their Internet service providers (ISP) from a reserved lot. Also, users of large online services like America Online access the Web from a limited number of "gateways" with their own IP addresses. As we learned, these types of patterns can be revealed from two different sources. To find out how web visitors got your site and what "keywords" were used at a search engine, the referrer log can be used.
