The United Nations 1996 Population Report estimated the world population growth to be about 3.1 percent per year. In contrast, the estimated disk storage is growing at about 130 percent per year, as reported by the information technology research group the International Data Corporation (IDC). All of these figures and projections are of course exclusive of the Web and the new data it is generating every second of the day with thousands of new websites going online.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{1A4}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>Information flows into your company's website every day—information about your visitors and potential future customers. So much information is coming in that the average business uses only about 7 percent of the data they keep. Still another marketing research firm, the Gartner Group, estimates that only 2 percent of the existing online data is currently being analyzed, a percentage which is rapidly falling toward zero as storage more than doubles each year. Meanwhile the growth of the Internet, websites, and electronic commerce is also expected to continue its growth over the next few years. Further, Figure 2-1 shows Emerging Technologies Research Group estimates that Internet usage from all types of methods of access will continue to increase into the next century.
