(See Figure 1-8.) A special type of neural network, known as a Kohonen network, or a Self-Organizing Map (SOM), is used to perform this type of analysis. An SOM is a form of &quot;unsupervised learning&quot; that organizes itself around distinct clusters in a data set without input from the analyst. SOMs are commonly used by retailers in market basket analysis to search for groupings between products that tend to sell in combination.
