These new approaches are the foundation of the technologies incorporated in today's data mining tools.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{1AC}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>During the last decade, the capabilities to both generate and collect data have grown enormously. For example, a retailer such as Wal-Mart needs to make daily updates of over a million transactions to its data warehouse for inventory analysis. With the advent of the Web, millions of new transactions are now occurring around the clock worldwide. One search engine is looking at analyzing between 25 and 75 million transactions every <I>day!</I> (Some of the first applications of data mining technology, such as Autoclass, originated with NASA. Why? Consider having to perform pattern recognition analysis on their Earth Observing System, which generates over 50 gigabytes of data per hour.)</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{1AD}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>Today the current rates of transactions, due in part to low storage costs, have flooded both forms databases and website servers and generated an urgent need for new tools that can intelligently assist in the analysis of this expanding ocean of data. For a company, data mining offers a solution to this problem by automating the search for relevant website visitors and online customer attributes. More importantly, data mining has the advantage of being totally unbiased and nonlinear in its approach to developing predictive models.
