The personal information or identity of visitors and customers would reside with the browser settings, much like the setting of your font preferences and other options. OPS would eliminate the need to complete registration forms and the constant retyping of personal information and preferences. For the website administrator it would make available a far greater amount of detailed demographic data for mining, and the enabling of responsive one-to-one service and customer customization.</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{759}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>Browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer already include new options that allow for the setting and storing of user information at the personal, home, and business levels (Figures 6-3 through 6-5).</FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{75A}'/><TABLE BORDER=0 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0><TR> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=12></TD> <TD ROWSPAN=5></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR><TD></TD> <TD><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3>New server software is also enabling web administrators a variety of methods for personalizing their sites, while at the same time capturing important information about their visitors' and customers' usage patterns. For example, new server software like the Microsoft Personalization System (MPS) allows administrators to capture and store web visitor information between sessions linked by cookies. MPS also allows developers to create globally unique identification cookies (GUIDs) that are identical in multiple websites, allowing for the sharing of cookies between multiple domains. This feature allows for the ''networking" of cookie information. The way this feature works is when a visitor appears at a server using this feature instead of sending a cookie, the MPS redirects the user to a different server. This second server then checks for a cookie, assigns a cookie if required, and bounces the visitor back to the original server with a message for that server about the cookie it set up. The original server then assigns a cookie that matches the cookie set by the master server. The result is a set of persistent cookies for two different domains with the same value.</FONT><FONT FACE='Times New Roman, Times, Serif' SIZE=3 COLOR=#FFFF00><!-- break --></FONT></TD><TD></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3></TD></TR><TR> <TD COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT=1></TD></TR></TABLE><A NAME='{75B}'/></FORM></P></TD></TR></TABLE><P><FONT SIZE=0 COLOR=WHITE></CENTER><A NAME="bottom"> </A><!-- netLibrary.com Copyright Notice --> </BODY></HTML>
