INSTALLATION PROCESS (& BRIEF INTRODUCTION):
--------------------------------------------

0 - subscribe to one of the Software Package mailing-lists:

    + Soft.Pack.CAOS mailing-list:
       - either point your browser to
         http://www.arcetri.astro.it/mailman/listinfo/caos
         and follow the instructions therein.
       - or send a blank message to
         [e-mail]

    + Soft.Pack.AIRY mailing-list:
       - either point your browser to
         http://www.arcetri.astro.it/mailman/listinfo/airy
         and follow the instructions therein.
       - or send a blank message to
         [e-mail]

    + Soft.Pack.SPHERE mailing-list:
       - either point your browser to
         http://www-luan.unice.fr/mailman/listinfo/caos-sphere
         and follow the instructions therein.
       - or send a blank message to
         [e-mail]

    [Subscribing to the mailing-list will insure you to receive new
    versions, patches, and updates related to the Software Package CAOS
    or AIRY or SPHERE and in any case those related to the CAOS Application
    Builder and the CAOS Library]

1 - unpack caos.tar.gz, containing the directory "caos" with the CAOS
    Application Builder 6.0, the CAOS Library 5.0, the Template Package 5.0
    that helps building one's own possible modules/packages.
    [note that no Software Package is included, but the template one.
    anyway the Software Packages are obtainable by visiting one of the
    CAOS web-pages
       http://www-luan.unice.fr/caos/
       http://lbtwww.arcetri.astro.it/CAOS/
    Updates and new versions will be distributed through the dedicated
    mailing-lists.]

2 - unpack work_caos.tar.gz, containing the working directory "work_caos"
    where your future simulation "projects" will be stored and from where
    CAOS is launched.

3 - verify that you have write permission on the unpacked files.

4 - unpack oaa_lib.tar.gz, containing some utilities and routines from the
    "Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri" IDL Library, available also from
    http://www.arcetri.astro.it/~riccardi/oaa_lib/. This library is
    necessary to make the whole system working.

5 - change directory to work_caos.

6a- UNIX/LINUX/MACOSX CASE:

   6a.1- fix the paths in caos_env.csh (or .sh, depending on your shell).
   6a.2- idem in caos_startup.pro.
   6a.3- type "source caos_env.csh" (or .sh).
         [Note that this is to be done for each opened shell where you will
         use IDL together with CAOS. Alternatively you can move the
         content of the file caos_env.csh into your .cshrc].

6b- WINDOWS XP CASE:

   6b.1- unlike in the previous case, you can eliminate the files 
         caos_env.csh and caos_env.sh and, instead, define the three
         environment variables CAOS_WORK (complete address of working
         directory .../work_caos/), CAOS_ROOT (complete address of source
         code directory .../caos/), and CAOS_HTML (complete address of
         desired html browser) from the windows XP "Start" menu, in 
         "Settings -> System -> Advanced -> Environment".
   6b.2- eliminate within the file "caos_startup.pro" the lines defining
         the various necessary paths (caos/, astrolib/, oaa_lib/, etc.)
         and, instead, define them within the IDL preferences (from the IDL 
         "File" menu, in "Preferences -> Path").

7 - launch IDL

8 -type "caos_init" at the IDL prompt in order to use the whole CAOS system
   (gives acces to the CAOS Application Builder and all the installed
   Software Packages)

9 -type "worksheet" at the CAOS prompt in order to use the CAOS Application
   Builder

10-install some Software Package !


NB: steps 0,1,2,3,4,6 are necessary just once: during installation.

SOME FINAL REMARKS:
-------------------

01-refer to the Template Package and included module xxx for a guide for
   writing a new module and so include your IDL code within the CAOS
   structure.

02-refer to

   for further informations on the CAOS system (or for submission of bug
   fixes, new useful modules, etc.).

03-please never redistribute any CAOS part by yourself, rather refer to
   previous step -- or at least recomend step 0!
