Java SyslogD

Introduction
Syslogd is a Java based syslog inplementation that allows youto monitor messages posted by the standard syslogd protocol, common on UNIX systems. By adding a simple line to your syslogconfiguration under UNIX, you can have all (or some) messagesredirected to this application.
Why? Because many people have good reason to monitor the logfiles on UNIX systems, and having a nice server to do so canbe a big help. This application allows you to tie certainsyslog messages to actions, which can range fromplaying a sound file, to running a system command, to invokinga custom Java class that you program.
For instance, on my PC, I have an entry that "listens" formessages posted to the MAIL facility. However, since thissyslog server has the ability to grep messages, Ican have it play a unique sound for each addressthat I configure it to recognize, while ignoring email toall other addresses. Also, when the PPP daemon on my UNIXhost reports that the connection has been lost, I fire upa custom class to invoke an rexec command that restartsthe PPP daemon. Yes, I know there are easier ways to dothis, but I like the notification on my PC. Anyway, I thinkyou get the idea.
The Configuration File
TheConfiguration Manualdescribes the format of the configuration file, whichdetermines every aspect of Syslogd's operation and thewindows displayed.
The Properties File
The properties file defines properties that affect thedisplay and operation of Syslogd. Currently, the only itemsdefined in the properties.txt file are window dimensions.
The propertied prefixed with 'SyslogD.mainWindow' affectthe display of Syslogd's primary window. Those propertiesprefixed by 'SyslogD.aboutDialog' affect the About dialogbox.
Forwarding Syslog Messages
Frequently, users of Syslogd are monitoring messages thatare actually logged on a UNIX host. These users typicallywish to bring a critical log message to the attention ofa user who is working on a PC. There are many other applications, but this is the most common.
To accomplish this task, one simply needs to add a line tothe syslog configuration file on the UNIX host. This file isusually located on the path '/etc/syslog.conf'. If you aretrying to forward messages from the UNIX host to a hostnamed 'pc.dom.ain', then you would add a line to thesyslog configuration file on the UNIX host as follows:
*.debug @pc.dom.ain

This line would cause messages in all facilities ('*'), withpriority greater than or equal to 'debug' to be forwarded tothe host named 'pc.dom.ain'.
That's All Folks
There's not much more to Syslogd.
Other secrets, of course, can be gleaned from the code.
tim.
The SyslogD Home Pagewill always contain the latest version of SyslogD foryour downloading pleasure.

$Id: manual.html,v 1.2 1998/07/29 02:15:11 time Exp $
Copyright (c) 1997 By Timothy Gerard Endres
SyslogD is licensed to you under theGNU General Public License.
