Your operating system vendor may sell<EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM> separately as part of a text formatting package that isn't includedwith the base operating system. Or your operating system vendor may not provide <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM> at all,meaning that you'd need to buy it from a third-party vendor suchas Elan or SoftQuad. For systems without <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>installed, manual pages are supplied ina formatted (<EMCLASS="emphasis">cat</EM>) form so that users can still read themwithout <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>.</P><PCLASS="para">The problem arises when you want to install third-partypackages, either commercial or public domain, which don't supplyformatted versions of their documentation. You can try to weedthrough <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM> source, but you'd be better off if youcould get a working version of <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>.</P><TABLECLASS="para.programreference"BORDER="1"><TR><THVALIGN="TOP"><ACLASS="programreference"HREF="examples/index.htm"TITLE="gnroff">gnroff</A><BR></TH><TDVALIGN="TOP"><ACLASS="indexterm"NAME="AUTOID-48506"></A><ACLASS="indexterm"NAME="AUTOID-48509"></A>The Free Software Foundation version of <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>, <EMCLASS="emphasis">gnroff</EM>,is on the CD-ROM.</TD></TR></TABLE><TABLECLASS="para.programreference"BORDER="1"><TR><THVALIGN="TOP"><ACLASS="programreference"HREF="examples/index.htm"TITLE="awf">awf</A><BR></TH><TDVALIGN="TOP">Another alternative is <EMCLASS="emphasis">awf</EM>, an <EMCLASS="emphasis">awk</EM>-based version of <EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>.<EMCLASS="emphasis">awf</EM> doesn't provide anywhere near all the functionality of<EMCLASS="emphasis">nroff</EM>, but it does a pretty good simulation, and it's a very clever idea. </TD></TR></TABLE><PCLASS="para"><EMCLASS="emphasis">awf</EM> recognizes both <EMCLASS="emphasis">man</EM> and <EMCLASS="emphasis">ms</EM> macros.
