Otherwise youwill get an error message.If you are using Berkeley UNIX, <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>linkname</I></CODE> must not exist - if it does, you will get an error.Under System V, <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>linkname</I></CODE> may already exist; if you areallowed to write the file, <EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM> destroys its old contents andcreates your link.If you don't have write access for <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>linkname</I></CODE>, <EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM> asks whether or not it is OK to override thefile's protection.For example:</P><PCLASS="para"><BLOCKQUOTECLASS="screen"><PRECLASS="screen">% <CODECLASS="userinput"><B>ln foo bar</B></CODE>ln: override protection 444 for bar? <CODECLASS="userinput"><B>y</B></CODE></PRE></BLOCKQUOTE></P><PCLASS="para">Typing <CODECLASS="literal">y</CODE> gives <EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM> permission to destroy the file <EMCLASS="emphasis">bar</EM> and createthe link.Note that this will still fail if you don't have writeaccess to the directory.</P><PCLASS="para">You are allowed to omit the <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>linkname</I></CODE> argument from the <EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM>command.In this case, <EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM> takes the last component of <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>filename</I></CODE> (i.e., everything after the last slash) and uses it for <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>linkname</I></CODE>.Of course, this assumes that <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>filename</I></CODE> doesn'trefer to the current directory.If it does, the command will fail:the link will already exist.For example, the commands below are the same:</P><PCLASS="para"><TABLECLASS="screen.co"BORDER="1"><TR><THVALIGN="TOP"><PRECLASS="calloutlist"><ACLASS="co"HREF="ch01_21.htm"TITLE="1.21 Making Pathnames ">&..</A> </PRE></TH><TDVALIGN="TOP"><PRECLASS="screen">% <CODECLASS="userinput"><B>ln -s ../archive/file.c</B></CODE>% <CODECLASS="userinput"><B>ln -s ../archive/file.c file.c</B></CODE></PRE></TD></TR></TABLE></P><PCLASS="para">Both create a link from <EMCLASS="emphasis">file.c</EM> in the current directory to<EMCLASS="emphasis">../archive/file.c</EM>.</P><PCLASS="para"><EMCLASS="emphasis">ln</EM> also lets you create a group of links with one command,provided that all of the links are in the same directory.Here's how:</P><PCLASS="para"><BLOCKQUOTECLASS="screen"><PRECLASS="screen">% <CODECLASS="userinput"><B>ln</B></CODE> <CODECLASS="replaceable"><I>file1 file2 file3 ... filen directory</I></CODE></PRE></BLOCKQUOTE></P><PCLASS="para">This command uses the filename from each pathname(after the last slash) as each link's name.
