One ofthe main limitations of this typesetter was that it could only usea total of four fonts on the same page - usually the Roman, <BCLASS="emphasis.bold">Bold</B>,and <EMCLASS="emphasis">Italic</EM> versions of the same typeface, plus a special fontthat included math characters and various other symbols. It doesn'tlet you do things like you see on these pages, which typically include sevenor eight fonts: the four listed above, plus a completely different typefacefor the headings, plus a constant width font (with bold and italicvariations) for use in showing scripts and examples.</P><PCLASS="para">The original <EMCLASS="emphasis">troff</EM> was replaced with a device independent version called<SPANCLASS="link"><EMCLASS="emphasis">ditroff</EM> (<ACLASS="linkend"HREF="ch43_15.htm"TITLE="From a Source File to the Printer ">43.15</A>)</SPAN>,which addressed these limitations and added a lot of other newfeatures as well. Unfortunately, on UNIX systems prior to System VRelease 4, <EMCLASS="emphasis">ditroff</EM> was unbundled fromUNIX and sold as a separate product, so all that some systems offeris the old version.</P><TABLECLASS="para.programreference"BORDER="1"><TR><THVALIGN="TOP"><ACLASS="programreference"HREF="examples/index.htm"TITLE="groff">groff</A><BR></TH><TDVALIGN="TOP"> Fortunately, there is a solution. The Free Software Foundation's<EMCLASS="emphasis">groff</EM> has all of the nice features of <EMCLASS="emphasis">ditroff</EM>.
