<p>现在看看XML，你可能听说过关于“XML将如何改变数字世界”的闹哄哄的议论 - “用XML你可以建立自己的标记符，”标准这样解释道。</p>
<p>“不错，”你肯定在想，“但是为什么呢？”</p>
<p>HTML变得如此流行的一个原因是它内在的灵活性。从一开始，HTML的一项基本规则是如果浏览器遇到一个不理解的标记符，就忽略之。这样，你可以在文档中出现<WIRED>标记符，然后你的浏览器只是简单地跳过它。这是一种实践和扩展Web，而又保持向后兼容的好办法。</p>
<p>这种办法一直工作得很好，直到有一天，有人提出了<TABLE>标记符，然后四家公司分头实现之。在几年前曾经有一段时间，当你在网页中使用table时，你变得不知所措
- 因为这么多的浏览器以很多种不同的方式绘制它们。</p>
<p>XML被设计成解决这样的问题，而不再象过去那样强烈依赖于集中的标准。现在，不用让浏览器忽略它们不认识的标记符，而是让它们进行查找。</p>
<p>突然之间，你可以不再担心标记符的意义，开始把注意力集中在标记语言之间的连接上。在Berners-Lee看来，你不再需要当前浏览器的“部分可理解”，而是，你可以测试“独立发明”
- 不同的系统可以共存并且可以互相学习。</p>
