C++ Compiler Plans for 10.0

History:    93/04/12 -- initial version
	    93/06/02 -- adjustment after release of 9.5


Note:   The comprehensiveness of the plan depends upon the release dates
        for 10.0.  The following plan assumes:

            (1) release date in the fall

            (2) no requirements to interface with IBM SOM nor with the
                Microsoft object model

            (3) no response to users, technical support (this is obviously
                ridiculous, some slack must be built into the schedule)

            (4) no new platforms beyond the set currently supported


Plan: immediate
-----

(0) bug fixes ( 2 man months terminating when patch level A is shipped )

    - bug fixes detected during testing
    - customer problems
    - optional:
	- DLL entry classes (support __export keyword for classes)
	- ambient class model (two possibilities)
	    - ignore
	    - full support ( lots of work )

(1) Cleanup ( 1 man month )
    -------

    - clean up source code to minimize future maintenance


(2) Compile-time speed ( 1 man month)
    ------------------

    - measure and respond
    - pre-compiled headers


(3) Execution-time speed (2 man months)
    --------------------

    - re-think/optimize exceptions, support NT
    - review Construction/Destruction strategy
    - implement "call-stretching" generally
    - implement "routine-flattening" generally


(4) Dwarf Support (2 man weeks)
    -------------

    - just on-going support for the browser, debugger projects


(5) Interaction with code-generation (3 man weeks)
    --------------------------------

    - drive the code-generation upgrades for C++
    - some desires:
        - respect precision
        - tail recursion
        - more floating optimization
        - more peep-holing
        - support for pointer-to-constant fetches
        - support for -op switch in code-generator


Plan: medium range

These plans will be firmed up in mid-June.


(1) Adaption to IBM SOM, Microsoft object model (2 man months)
    -------------------------------------------

    - will be done only if business case and definitions are complete


(2) Introduce C switch (3 man months)
    ------------------

    - adapt compiler to compile C source
