Note that for any kind of PtrHash (WCPtrHashTable, WCPtrHashSet, WCPtrHashDict)
destructors are not called on the elements pointed to. Only the pointers are
stored so the elements are not copied, constructed or destroyed. The values
stored in the elements should not be changed such that the equivalence to
the old value is modified.
ValHash classes store a copy of elements (using Type's copy constuctor),
which will be destroyed when the element is removed or the hash cleared or
deleted (or if the hash goes out of scope if it is a local variable).

This is the base class to all hash tables and sets. Exception handling is
performed using this class. By default, no exceptions will be thrown, and
hash functions and operators will leave the hash table in a valid
state on an error. Exceptions can be enabled to be thrown using the
exceptions member function
available exceptions:

The following exceptions can be thrown by hash tables:
- WCExcept::not_empty
if a hash which does not have zero entries is being
destroyed by the destructor, this error can be thrown.
- WCExcept::not_unique
thrown when attempting to insert a value into a HashSet when an
equivalent value already exists in the HashSet.
- WCExcept::out_of_memory
thrown when an attempt to insert an element, resize a hash table,
copy a hash table with the copy constructor, or
perform an assignment fails due to lack of memory.
- WCExcept::zero_buckets
thrown when an attempt was made to resize to hash table or set to
have zero buckets.

WCValHashTable<Type>, WCPtrHashTable<Type>:

These are hash tables which do not require values (or values pointed to) to
be unique. Collisions are handled by seperate changing.
The constructor requires a hashing function which given a reference to Type,
returns a unsigned:
unsigned hash_fn( Type &value );
The returned unsigned mod num_buckets determines the
bucket into which the value will be hashed to. The return values of hash_fn
can be spread over the entire range of unsigned numbers, and should appear
random for any set of value parameters. hash_fn's returns must be the same
for values which are equivalent by Type's == operator.
See the static member function bitHash for a general hash function which
can be used to simply implement hash_fn.
Hash tables will _not_ automatically resize the number of buckets on
insertion or removing elements. This could be done by using ..HashTable
as a base class, and providing an insert member function to do a resize
when appropriate, and then call ..HashTable::insert to insert the element.
A similar strategy could be used for remove and removeAll member functions if
desired. Note that copy constructors and assignment operators are not
inherited, but you can provide the following inline definitions (assuming
your class inherited from ..HashTable is named MyHashTable):

- ..HashTable( unsigned (*hash_fn)( const Type & )
, unsigned num_buckets = WC_DEFAULT_HASH_SIZE )
constructs a hash table with no entries and with num_buckets buckets.
hash_fn is used to determine which bucket each value will be hashed into.
num_buckets must be greater than 0, and an attempt to create a hash table
with 0 buckets will create a hash table with 1 bucket.
If the hash table object can be created, but no buckets allocated, the
table will be created with 0 buckets. Attempting to insert into a hash
table with 0 buckets with throw an out_of_memory error (if enabled)
- ..HashTable( unsigned (*hash_fn)( const Type & )

, void * (*user_alloc)( size_t size )
, void (*user_dealloc)( void *old, size_t size ) )
Like the above constructor, but also provides a user allocator and user
deallocator to allocate and free memory when entries are inserted and
removed from the hash table. The user_alloc function must return a
pointer to allocated memory of at least size bytes, or 0 if it cannot
perform the allocation (which will cause insert to fail). The
user_dealloc function must free "old", which was allocated by the
user_alloc function, and is of size "size". You may take advantage
of the fact that user_alloc will always be called with the same
"size" parameter for hash tables of the same type (same ..HashTable
type, and templated over the same size). To determine the size of
the objects that the user_alloc and user_dealloc functions will be
required to allocate and free, the following macros may be used:

For example, WCValHashTable<my_type> will require user_alloc and
user_dealloc to handle objects of size WCValHashTableItemSize( my_Type ).
- ..HashTable( const ..HashTable &orig )
the copy constructor. Makes a copy of orig, including copying the
hash function, all values or pointers stored in the hash, and the
exception state. If there is enough memory to create the hash object,
but not enough memory for the buckets, then the hash table will be
created with 0 buckets. If there is not enough memory to copy all of
the values or pointers in the hash table, then only some will be copied,
and the number of entries will correctly reflect the number copied.
If all of the elements cannot be copied, an out_of_memory exception
is thrown if enabled in orig,
- ~..HashTable()
the destructor: destroys the hash table object, including clearing the
entries using the clear member function. If the hash table is not empty
(contains at least one entry) when this destructor is invoked, the
not_empty exception will be thrown if enabled.

the assignment operator. destroys this, and then copies orig, including
copying the hash function, all values or pointers stored in the hash, and
the exception state. If there is enough memory to create the hash object,

- int operator==( const ..HashTable &rhs ) const
The hash table equality operator. Two hash tables are equivalent if they
are the same object (ie they have the same address). Returns 0 if not
equal and non-zero if equal.

WCValHashTable, and the corresponding parameters for WCPtrHashTable member
functions have type "Type *".
- static unsigned bitHash( void * ptr, size_t size )
This can be used to implement a hashing function for any type. A
hashing value is generated from the first size bytes pointed to by ptr.

- void clear()
remove all values or pointers from the hash table, so that the table has
no entries. The number of buckets will remain unchanged.

- void clearAndDestroy()
call delete for all pointers in the hash table, and reinitialize the
hash table to be 0 length.
- int contains( const Type &elem ) const
return non-zero if an element equivalent to elem is stored in the hash
table, or zero if there is no equivalent element.
Note that equivalence is based on Type's == operator for both
WCValHashTable and WCPtrHashTable.
- unsigned entries() const
returns the number of entries stored in the hash table.
** VAL ONLY **
- int find( const Type &search, Type &return_val ) const
attempts to find an element equivalent to search in the hash table. If
an equivalent element is found, non-zero is returned, and return_val is
assigned the found element. If no such element is found, zero is
returned and return_val is unchanged.
Note that equivalence is based on Type's == operator.
** PTR ONLY **
- Type *find( const Type *elem ) const
attempts to find an element equivalent to elem in the hash table. If
an equivalent element is found, it is returned. Otherwise zero is
returned.
Note that equivalence is based on Type's == operator (ie the values
pointed to are compared).

call user_fn for every element in the hash table. user_fn has prototype:

and will be passed each element in turn as the first parameter, and the
data passed to forAll as the second paramter. data can be used to
pass user_fn any information which it requires.

- int WCPtrHashTable::insert( Type *elem )
Insert elem into the hash table, using hash_fn to determine which
bucket it should be stored. If allocation of the node to store elem
fails, then an out_of_memory exception will be thrown if enabled.
Otherwise, if the allocation failed, zero will be returned, and the
hash table will be unchanged. Non-zero will be returned on a successful
insert.
- int isEmpty() const
return non-zero if the hash table is empty, zero if the hash table
contains at least one entry.
- unsigned occurrencesOf( const Type &elem ) const
return the number of elements stored in the hash table which are
equivalent to elem.
Note that equivalence is based on Type's == operator for both
WCValHashTable and WCPtrHashTable.
- int WCValHashTable::remove( const Type &elem )
- Type *WCPtrHashTable::remove( const Type *elem )
remove one element equivalent to elem from the hash table. Returns zero
if no equivalent element was found. If an equivalent element was found,
non-zero (WCValHashTable) or the pointer being removed (WCPtrHashTable)
is returned.
If the hash table contains more than one element equivalent to elem,
the element which was added first will be removed.
Note that equivalence is based on Type's == operator for both
WCValHashTable and WCPtrHashTable.
- unsigned removeAll( const Type &elem )
removes all elements equivalent to elem from the hash table, and returns
the number of elements removed (zero if the hash table contains no
element equivalent to elem).

- void resize( unsigned new_num_bucket )
resize the hash table to have new_num_buckets buckets. Note that this is
fairly expensive since hash_fn must be called for each entry
in the hash table, and the entry moved to the new bucket. Entries are
_not_ destroyed or created in the process of being moved. If there is
not enough memory to resize the hash table, the out_of_memory exception
will be thrown, if enabled, and the hash table will contain the number
of buckets it contained before the resize.
If new_num_bucket is 0, then a zero_buckets exception will be thrown if
enabled, and no resize will be performed.
The hash table is guaranteed to contain the same number of entries after
the resize whether or not an error occured or not.
WCValHashSet<Type>, WCPtrHashSet<Type>:

These are hash tables which require every element in the hash set to be
unique, by Type's == operator.
These hash tables are inherited from WCValHashTable<Type> and
