The means of production should be distributed as widely as possible among the populace; they should neither be hoarded by a oligarchy, nor controlled by the government. Certainly the means of production should not be held by the government in the name of fictitious communal entities, but should be held by individuals in their own hands, or in the case of land, under their own feet. For those projects beyond the scope of an individual or family, a guild system is recommended.
<! In modern terms, distributivism is a "back to the land" or "Small is Beautiful" movement, unopposed to technology per se but Luddite in its belief that progress should benefit people and not be pursued for its own sake (or for the gain of a few at the expense of the many).>

On distributivism:

<!WA0>Third Way, a British political party advocating distributivism
<!WA1>A history of distributivism from Third Way
<!WA2>References on distributivism
Related links:

For a novel perspective on traditionalist politics in America see Peter Kreeft's <!WA3>article in the November issue of <!WA4>First Things
The <!WA5>Traditionalist Conservatism Page

<!WA6>Rerum Novarum: An Encyclical Letter of Pope Leo XIII on the Condition of the Working Classes (1891)
<!WA7>Quadragesimo Anno: Encyclical of Pope Pius XI on Reconstruction of the Social Order (1931)
<!WA8>Centesimus Annus: Encyclical of Pope John Paul II on the Hundredth Anniversary of Rerum Novarum (1991)

Recently published: a refutation of "<!WA9>The American Distributivist" (Daniel Krotz), both in Generally Speaking: The newsletter of <!WA10>The American Chesterton Society
