A key part of the project is the construction of the TRAINS system, which provides the research platform for a wide range of issues in natural language understanding, mixed-initiative planning systems, and representing and reasoning about time, actions and events. Four years have now passed since the beginning of the project. Each year we have produced a demonstration system that focused on a dialog that illustrates particular aspects of our research. The commitment to building complete integrated systems is a significant overhead on the research, but we feel it is essential to guarantee that the results constitute real progress in the field. This paper describes the goals of the project, and our experience with the effort so far.</EM><P>[1] Tsuneaki Kato's address is NTT Information and CommunicationSystems Lab, Kanagawa, JAPAN.<BR>[2] Massimo Poesio's address is Centre for Cognitive Science,University of Edinburgh, 2 Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9LWScotland, UK.<BR><HR><H2>Table of Contents</H2><UL> <LI><!WA1><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/intro.html">Introduction</A><LI><!WA2><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/task.html">Choosing the Task</A><LI><!WA3><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/agent.html">The TRAINS System as a Conversational Agent</A> <LI><!WA4><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/systems.html">The TRAINS Demonstration Systems</A><LI><!WA5><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/infrastructure.html">The TRAINS System Infrastructure</A> <UL> <LI><!WA6><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/infra-architecture.html">The TRAINS-93 Architecture</A> <LI><!WA7><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/infra-epilog.html">Episodic Logic</A> <LI><!WA8><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/infra-ebtl.html">The EBTL Representation</A> </UL> <LI><!WA9><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/modules.html">An Overview of the TRAINS Modules</A> <UL> <LI><!WA10><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-grammar.html">Syntactic and Semantic Rules</A> <LI><!WA11><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-lexical.html">Lexical Processing</A> <LI><!WA12><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-parser.html">The Parser</A> <LI><!WA13><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-deindexing.html">Deindexing</A> <LI><!WA14><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-conversation.html">Conversation Act Analysis</A> <LI><!WA15><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-dialogue.html">The Dialogue Manager</A> <LI><!WA16><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-domain.html">The Domain Plan Reasoner</A> <LI><!WA17><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/mod-execution.html">The Execution Planner</A> </UL> <LI><!WA18><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/other.html">Other Issues</A> <UL> <LI><!WA19><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/other.html#simulator">The TRAINS Simulator</A> <LI><!WA20><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/other.html#temporal">Temporal Reasoning</A> <LI><!WA21><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/other.html#speech">Speech Repairs</A> </UL> <LI><!WA22><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/discussion.html"> Discussion</A><LI><!WA23><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/refs.html">References</A><LI><!WA24><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/trainstns.html">TRAINS Technical Note Series</A><LI> <!WA25><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/trains/tn94-3/trainsother.html">Other TRAINS-related Publications</A></UL><HR><ADDRESS><!WA26><A HREF="http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/ferguson/">George Ferguson</A></ADDRESS></BODY>
