To this end, we are buildingtechnologies supporting the storage, communication, and processing ofmultimedia data. In contrast to other commercial and researchapproaches, which require specialized hardware, operating systems, ornetworks to be usable, the technologies we are designing fit into thecurrent research environment. Our premise is that the currenthardware, software, and communication infrastructure is sufficient tosupport research into continuous media systems and applications. Weare verifying this hypothesis by building working systems.<h3>Our Approach to Research</h3><p>Our group uses an <i>systems</i> approach to building applications. Wefind "killer applications" that can almost be built using thecurrent technology, and try to build them. In doing so, we inevitablyfind components of the application that require new algorithms, weoptimize interactions between the components, and we build frameworksfor combining the components.
